Title: Black Mercedes SLR
Name: Jeff Patton
Country: USA
Software: 3ds max, mental ray, Photoshop

This was mainly just a test render (probably seems like that's all I do)...but the SLR model came from Evermotion (thanks), here's the link: http://www.evermotion.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=64865

So, in this render I created the lighting, texturing, and composition, but not the modeling of the car.

I rarely say this, but that is photoreal.

I'm hard pressed finding anything that says it isn't a photo. However when koolknits said the back tyre is in the air, I checked and yes, it is. Fix that and it's flawless!

Thanks for the comments. Sorry to disappoint but the background is indeed a photo, not modeled. Screen grab attached.

I checked when making the screen capture just now, the back tire is firmly planted on the ground plane. It must be an illusion that it's floating due to the dark tire texture and the dark shadows. But it's odd, I do see the gap that you guys are referring to!

EDIT: I'll try to put the tire through the ground plane slightly, since the front tire penetrates the ground plane ever so slightly...maybe that's the difference.

Crap, scratch that last post. You guys are spot on (great eyes! thank you!). I had opened the wrong file just now. The rear wheel is off the ground plane slightly in the file I rendered the image from. Fixed it, thanks again for catching that.

Beautiful render as usual Jeff!! How about a little insight into the set-up, sun&sky?

Hey man! Thanks. No mrSun/mrSky here, just a skylight + HDR. Ground plane uses the mr matte/shadow/reflection production shader. Car materials are all A&D materials.

Updated render with fixed rear wheel (thanks again for catching that):

(Added a tiny bit of film grain to this one, and a bit more blue tint)

Jeff, I've been following your lighting setups for a few months now - and I have to say, you've nailed it with this one. Absolutely beautiful lighting.

We'd love to see some breakdowns on how you acheived this (like you do on your blogs).

The SLR has to be my fav. supercar. Great choice! ;)

hi Jeff, it is certainly very nice render  , but in my opinion, the shadow under the car is very dark compared to overal composition and also the whole car needs to be brighten up just a little bit more ;) ( i`m viewing this image on calibrated lcd with as-ips matrix, so thats maybe why the others may not noticed the mentioned flaws )

but in my opinion, the shadow under the car is very dark compared to overal composition and also the whole car needs to be brighten up just a little bit moreThanks for the critique, I agree with you. I was thinking the darkest part of my composition should be equal the darkest shadow area of the background image (which now it isn't). I don't exactly know why, but I kind of like the contrast, perhaps because it helps draw my eye to the car instead of the background? At any rate, I totally agree with you that's it's not correct.

Dont worry about the background, in my artististic ( i hope i have it :) ) view, the car is already dominant, so additional brightness wont mess your intention to draw eye on that car ..

Cool, thanks. I always seem to struggle with composition (rule of thirds and all that jazz) and 'properly' leading the viewer towards the right areas of an image.

Looking like a photo...
Realy great work... Your works are always wonderful for non-3ds-users too.
Can I ask you some info about the chromatic aberration film effect? it is a post-work?

I made a work with the same model here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=132&t=611388)

I have a quick question here, I was wondering why you have the plane there under the car? Is that to "capture" the shadow and then render that in a seperate pass to then use in compositing? I hope that made sense.

Thanks again Jeff for all your efforts.
