Hi All,
Ive started making some fx tutorials in written form and video for use in the film and tv industry.
Some are free like the one listed below but the rest will cost you a small once off fee.

check them out, Ill be adding heaps more and constantly updating, so get in
while its still early days (and cheap :) ) Cos when its up and running at full capacity prices might change accordingly.

The complete list of tutorials lives here:

http://www.modernmayhem.com/wordpress/?page_id=6

My first vid tut is an easy one, 3d arrows using the particles instancer.
AND ITS FREE!

I hope you find it useful so far. But stay tuned for updates.

Cheers,

Phil

I haven't seen any of the tutorials yet but you may want to consider taking down the price a bit... you can buy a Digital Tutors or Gnomon DVD for $50 and you can learn a ton of techniques and effects.

Why pay $30 when you only learn one effect?

Phildog cheers. I may subscribe. :)

Why pay $30 when you only learn one effect?

its not 30$ for one effect. 30$ gets you in for good as i read on his site.

Anyways, hey man I might be interested in signing up I might even do it tonight but im wondering. Like your not just going to go strong and do a decent amount then sorta die in a few months? Thats the only thing im wondering because im working on saving for school and every penny counts type of thing.

thanks for the replies.
i put a bit of thought into how much to charge...ideally it should just be free but since im the only one working in my fam i need to raise some more cash :(

yeah i thought it would be easier for me and anyone joining just to make it once off.... is 30 bucks really too much? gee... i was going to charge more! hehe. i will consider putting it down but theres quite alot on there already, plus ive got a list of things to add over the next few weeks..including dust effects and fluid fx integration. Realistic lighting with volumetrics, 3delight... i actually have alot to add still. but not now...im going on an easter break :p

also if anyone wants any particular tutorial on anything fx related let me know and ill add it

cheers

Phil

Im back !

Ive just released another video tutorial. (This will require subscription tho, which ofcourse gets you into the entire site).
Its the first part of a "making of tornado project" series. Go to the homepage for more info on the tutorial Or click the image to view the quicktime of the finished tornado.

http://www.modernmayhem.com/images/pw_tornado_still.jpg (http://www.modernmayhem.com/wordpress/?page_id=15)

www.modernmayhem.com (http://www.modernmayhem.com/wordpress)

I thought it was important to do a previs, layout and rigging type video first, as this was where I think 50 percent of the success of the effect will depend on. My project, in hindsight, definitely could have been better so I discuss how to improve on this in the video. So watch and discover how to (or how not to :)) set up your shot to get the most out of it later on.

My site is fast becoming worth the investment guys so get in early before I start charging more . Well that may not happen for a while, but its only a once off payment and if the list of video tutes keep growing then its only a matter of time before I do increase the fee. Otherwise if you get in now you wont have to worry about it for another year!

Im making a 'introduction to particle expressions' video next and then will go back to part 2 of the tornado series, "Tornado project part 2: animating particles"

Cheers guys

Phil

phil see im just worried that after a few months you might hardly release anything or the idea might die and you will just stop. Eather way I think the material you already have up is worth the price. I just have to wait till my credit card balance is down and the payment goes throught at the end of the month then ill give it a shot man!

Hi Phil,

All this stuff looks great. Cheers for going to the effort, and as a one off price $30 is a bargain.

I'm gonna sign up when I get my new bank card through the post (I lost my other one whilst drunk at the weekend).

Hi phill, it's nice to keep us updated here but how about replying to a PM that i sent to you 5 days ago regarding this service? I'm worried that you are going to just ignore(or respond after week(s)) questions once we have paid for this service..

Also how about paying via paypal?

phildog

pms.... oops sorry i totally forgot to check those.

Ill check them now...

One thing tho, its weird how people are asking if the site will die? Its my own personal portfolio too so i doubt it very much... why is that a common question? is that what people have done in the past?

VIDEO TUTORIAL: Basic Particle Expressions: Level - Easy. (http://www.modernmayhem.com/wordpress/?page_id=37)

A good primer for getting familiar with maya particle expressions.
Topics covered include:

creation expressions
runtime expressions
goals
adding extra attributes and new maya features (from 8.0 upwards to 2008)
custom attributes
There will be another vid following this one, that covers ramps and more expressions using a missile trail scene as a guide.

The link is here:

Hey Phil,

I was gonna email you again, but figured it might be helpful here.

I just want to get this right...

The tutorials that a member will have access to are:

Tornado Project
per particle killField
ground interaction using nCloth
instancer rotation for fluid looking effects
ink usiing softbody emission
volumetric clouds

These are aside from the intro ones. My question is, are these accesible now? Or those are the topics you will be covering in the coming months and you've started with the tornado project?

You're doing a great thing sharing your knowledge. Keep up the great work.

Hi George, thanks for your question.

As well as the list youve provided there are more video tutorials

basic Particle Expressions 1.
basic Particle Expressions 2 (already uploaded i just need to write a quick blurb about it b4 i publish it)
making of tornado 1: layout

...and coming up this week too is
making of tornado 2: animation

and followed by

dust, integrating maya particles, fluidfx and renderman (3delight)

plus i added a useful list of particle expressions to the member list only.

theres heaps more on my to do list, but im sure theres enough there already to keep you busy until then.

Cheers

Phil

Hi, thanks for the enquiries.
yeah i will be doing this tutorial next week (or the week after that at the latest). It will be easy to follow dont worry.

in the meantime you can download a fully working 3delight for maya install
from here;

http://www.3delight.com/en/index.php/products/3delight_for_maya/tutorials

as well as follow the start up tutorials. That will put you in a good place for the tutorial coming up next week

im actually shying away from the forum idea. There are heaps of ways asks questions tho, you could leave one here, email me or even leave comments on the site.
i find that forums will take too much time to manage and moderate (ive tried that before in the past). plus in emails/comments one tends to just say the important stuff :)

well as being a subscriber of your site, i think quite a few people would want to ask you questions. If we can look at the discussions and reading your answers then we can learn a lot more at the same time. Like the other member said, I'm up for a forum idea. It does not necessary have to be full featured forum like phpbb2. Please check your pm.

All videos now upgraded to quicktime h264. dont know why i didnt do that to start with.
It may take a fraction longer to load initially but the quality is much better and the file size is half! (So the videos overall will load quicker too, its just the initial quicktime thing it does)

This video is an absolute must to view if you are thinking about using Fluid FX in production.

We follow the tradition here at Modernmayhem in providing you with useful tutorials that you can actually use in production and that makes you fully understand whats going on once and for all.
For this tutorial we start a series of production examples. This one is for creating a 'Steam' effect. It covers the absolute basics and follows right through to the effect using a technique I use in production to get the most out of fluid fx, predictably and efficiently....

GO TO THE TUTORIAL NOW (http://www.modernmayhem.com/wordpress/?page_id=59)

I'm just curious, are you going to have complete tutorials on the stuff that you did? ;-) especially the WTC and CG blood. The tornado looks awesome. And I'm also curious, if you do lots of scripting or sometimes cheat too.

Any idea when the 3rd part of the tornado sequence will be up?

phildog
05-27-2008, 02:27 PM
Hi all thanks for the queries.

EightBit: yes $49 for a whole year !:wip:
a6u5t: yes cheating is good! very good. But ofcourse you cant avoid having to script something from scratch. Ive done both in my experience.
Ill definitely get to the tornado part 3 video after my fluid fx series. I just want to make a couple more example vids (i had some special requests). So maybe in a couple of weeks.
wixman: yes as i mentioned just before to a6u5t ill be doing that next (after the fluidfx stuff), i cant wait to get into some 3delight stuff too. :) I've been a bit busy lately redesigning the site too. So things should pick up again very soon.
The tornado tute part 3 will cover how to make dust with both sprites and particles with deep shadows in 3delight.

Wixman
05-27-2008, 02:51 PM
ahh, so was the tornado mainly sprites with deep shadow then? I wasn't sure if you used instanced fluids for some of it... anyway, it should be interesting - looking forward to it.

Thanks

phildog
05-27-2008, 03:01 PM
not exactly.
i used renderman volumetrics for the funnel and the top part of the clouds.
you can achieve similar or even better results now in fluid fx and mental ray.
(i could show how to do that but its a bit slow... the solution i used anyway).
id prefer to show a more user friendly approach

I agree with saslacker. Phil is providing up-to-date tutorials all in one place. The quality of the tuts are excellent and there are loads of useful hints and tips! I think the $50 is a bargain considering what is already on his site, and the fee will grant you acces for a year, meaning we will end up having a wide source of help and inspiration, even if Phil only added a tutorial every month - but it does happen more frequently than that.

He has even made a forum you can acces as part of the subscription.

Personally I think Phil is putting way more work into this, than you pay for.

Aikiman

Yeah Ill add my plug for the site. The tutorials are great to learn from and Phil has a lot to offer those wanting to do VFX. Not only does the site have tutorials it also has a forum in which to ask Phil or anybody questions and he updates his site regularly as well as visits the forum to answer your questions. Sure you can buy a specialised DVD and learn a lot but Phils skillset is wide and you can be taught almost directly by him like in a classroom situation. Phil and his helpers have done a great job for the CG community so far lets hope we can keep it going like this for a long time to come.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone.
its very appreciated.

Yeah the pace of the tutes are slowing down but they are getting more advanced now.

I'd like to cover the next few lessons in great detail too so its not going to speed up :)

It does depend on the subject matter, i noticed the next few things on the list after that are
smaller projects so the time to execute them should be less.

We are signing up a new teacher soon too, but in the very short term we are all really busy on production. dont worry tho, this hasnt changed since we launched the site, you know how it is... crunch time cycles. :)

Great site, as soon I get my cards back again i'm on it.

I have a little suggestion/idea for future tuts,
how about something on advanced controling of
many objects, like in houdini maybe.
It has great production value, if you ever tried to
make lots of animated neon signs with that little
lamps going on and off in specified directions you'll
see that particle instances are pretty horrible and
pfx just dont cut it sometimes.
Maybe some unortodox approach could be done,
like in that softbody emission for fluid ink.

cheers

Hiya, yeah its coming. I just made 3 more vids in preparation for this.

sprite anim using fluids.

sprite rendering using mental ray

sprite rendering using 3delight.

they are up , just not linked on the website yet.
anyway here is the info from my forum

http://www.modernmayhem.com/fluidsprites.html
which covers a brief example of animating particles with fluids as an example scene

and

http://www.modernmayhem.com/fluidspritesrendering.html
which has both mental ray and 3delight video tutorials.

the tornado project is next. this was to set it up so it was not all in one vid (too much)

cheers for last tornado project (render)

Ahh so is this the technique you used to render the tornado?

Looks decent in 3Delight. Shame about the particle rendering limitations in mental ray... guess it's a work in progress thing. Hopefully we'll see some more bits and pieces in the next release. I've not really tried rendering particles in MR yet at all but from what i've heard it's completely uncompatible with particleSamplerInfo

The latest video tutorial is how to render the 'tornado project' funnel. Using a couple of techniques. First a custom mental ray software cloud shader (to achieve real 3d noise thats local to each particle)
Secondly using fluids. (3delight is covered in the previous vid)

The tutorial site actually has 4 more new videos since i last posted.

He's got a particle driven fluid tornado example near the end, do you have a tutorial that explains exactly how this is done?

There's a lot of information on that technique on this here forum. always do a search first.

No there isn't one on there at the moment - but there's a few videos on scripting with fluids, so similar techniques

He is using particles to drive the density and velocity of the fluid.... Imagine using the fluid as a solid volume cube (just completely filled up). Shooting particles through it (in his case it looks like he's using goalU and goalV on a nurbs cylindrical extrude. You can use some expressions like fluidVoxelInfo, getFluidAttr and setFluidAttr to force data into each voxel, specifically based on the particles.

Once you have that particle data, like velocity .. You can set the fluid opacity to 'speed' and it should only give you density when things are really moving (or however you tweak it) ...

I am sure it is a tad more involved than just that because his motion and volume looks nuts, but.. thats where I would start :)

Exactly right! Its really not much more complicated then that. I just did a few variations and combined them in comp

or Phil could walk over to my desk and ask me

yep thats correct thanks Wixman.
infact one of the tutes previously done has a very similar approach ie; scripting fluids,
in one case ive got velocity in there as an example but commented it out.
its all using the same techniques.

I find the tutorials Phil (modernmayhem.com) provides has really excellent value!!
Heaps of nice little tips and tricks, and solutions that work for actual production.
Like Dazzan said, this guy really knows what he's talking about.

Phildog-
Ok so as soon as I get the skrill I'm gonna sign up for this thing. (Just paid for the CG Society Membership, sorry.) The tuts. look amazing and simple to follow. (From the only free one I have seen anyway. (Arrow particle instancer)) I am only regretful that I could not take advantage when it was only $30 and not $50. I do however want to know if this is still a one time fee or if I have to renew in a year?

To all you people out there bitching about the cost- Suck it up dudes and dudettes. You wanna get good, you pay the price. Even at $50 this sort of knowledge is WAY more valuable than this minimal fee. Hell you can pay that for a nice dinner and a movie... and then what are you left with? Poop in a toilet and memories of a movie that you are like, "Howd they do that effect?" Well, you could potentially find out!

I'm in dude! Thanks for all your hard work.

Hi Guys,

thanks for all the positive feedback.
Happy new year to everyone!.

I plan to continue my committment to this site this year also.

The main positive feedback comment i am getting is that people are
learning heaps. thats great news!
The main negative feedback comment is the speed of new released material.
I am trying! last year (so long ago now) was just crazy busy.
The schedule so far this year looks heaps better :) heres hopeing it stays that
way.

thanks again

One thing tho, its weird how people are asking if the site will die? Its my own personal portfolio too so i doubt it very much... why is that a common question? is that what people have done in the past?

I find this ironic. lol

It might have to do with his security settings, in which case he needs to change them. I checked one of my emails he sent to me a while back which said that his system checks for IP address and associated passwords and usernames. im not sure but if you log in to his site from another computer using the same username/pass it may cause some sort of disruption. I dont know enough about this sort of thing really but it could be the smoke from the fire.

Although that is true, it is not the reason why I (and I guess many others) are quiet disappointed. You advertised your site in a way that gave people the impression, that if they pay a certain amount of money, they would have access to a site that would provide new tutorials on a regular basis. This was unfortunately not the case.

check them out, Ill be adding heaps more and constantly updating,
This was like 2years ago, and "Compiling the fluid Emitter" is still the latest tutorial on your site.

phildog
