I also registered for the Maya U4 course at the 3duniversity this summer and heard that it's great

And it's not even that expensive ($2500 incl housing)

I personally think that you can learn much faster if your not in a class. but the experience is nice. i've always found that learning in school can be quite slow. the only problem of being on your own is that it can sometimes be intimidating to start new things. well thats how I was.

just do some good free tuts from online. that joan of arc tut intorduced me to modeling and drove me away from doing nothing but test renders with primatives(thank god for that tutorial).

I think those summer maya classes are pretty good. aint it a 12 week course and 5 days a week and 6 hours a day. that would be fun. and you'd have a good excuse to do maya all day long.

You don't know what's a U4 class!!!
I've been here for 4 weeks, having class ALL days (including Easter sunday) and spending between 14 to 27 hours in the lab!!!
Believe me, there's no way you'll learn this fast by yourself.
The unanimous thought here after the 1st week was that everybody had already learned more in 1 week than in 1 year by ourselves.

Then there's the I12 class that lasts 12 weeks and it's also very intensive, probably not as much as the U4. The U4 program consists of the I12 packed into 4 weeks.

Go to www.3duniversity.com and check out the program contents.
Today we started MEL and our overnight assignment is already an Autorig script!!!
Would you do an Autorig script after playing around with MEL at home for one day? I don't think so...

donno if i would say its better to learn on your own either

when in a class you have a question it gets answered (in depth)

i wish i had the cash for the U4 class with busby but right now =(

but like others have said Jason Busby(3dbuzz) is a great teacher..you can tell jsut from his free VTMs that he makes learning fun and easier

though learning on your own has a satisfaction of doing it yourself..
learning it from a Pro has bigger and better rewards

Tyson Allen:
you may wanna check out Gnomon Online as well
ive heard great things about them too
and there based in Hollywood CA.
