Well here I am.

Not sure what I will do but I want to give it a go.
I'm thinking alien to human interaction on some public transit - some kind of transport tube or space age subway - something along those lines.

Should be fun - Good luck to all

So I have searched high and low over the whole island to find any of the Brin books.
No luck here. Ordering from Amazon would be a crapshoot at best. One of the books could be here in a week or 3 months no way to tell.

I think I will attempt this suggestion from the Sundiver trailer:
Numbered section 1. (Pages 3-13 in the U.S. paperback)

Jacob Demwa rides a a fast-leaping robotic whale in order to train a neo-dolpin.

I have read all the sample chapters and linked info from the help pages here.
I wonder if it would be bad form to ask the author if there are further discriptions of the robotic whales in chapters not posted in the sample section of the David Brin site?
There is a link in the pdf to contact the author with questions - anyone try that yet?

So time to get my first milestone going - or I will never make it to the end.

I did find a copy of "The Postman" from David Brin at the local public library. Read it in a few sittings. No help with the Uplift challenge but still a pretty good read and some background on how David Brin tells a story.

My first concept sketch.

I'm going to loosely base the robo trainer whale off the orca.
I'll build one for the man and one for the neo dolphin
The final layout will be both of them jumping up and out of the water with the rockets described in the sample chapter from SunDiver firing as they both break free of the water surface.
That is the XSI low rez man primitive showing how the pilot would be positioned.

(This is pretty weak but I should have better stuff to put up soon)

First model.
The star dolphin.
Poly modeled in the challenge provided XSI-ESS
Not sure how detailed he will be as most of him will not be showing in the final render.
I will model the neural link that lets him use tools. Maybe something along the lines of the cover art sample from StarTide Rising

Here is the basic hull of the robo whale with a segmented articulated tail.
I don't like the angular fins and think I will change them.

Lots of details to do - deadline sure is coming up fast.

Wires for the robo whale, sort of.
Nurbs model so no real wires yet.

Your entry is far ahead of mine in just about everything from design to the quality of the modelling and rendering. I think luck will not be enough to help me. Really amazing stuff.

I'm going to push on with what I am doing - my final composition will be above the surface of the water - if I can pull it off & get it done in time (not looking good on that front).

thanks for looking.

Back again, have not given up but progress is not going real well and time is running out.

Here is my robo-whale pilot - I modelled the wetsuit & helmet using poly tools then used the head and hands off the XSI man primitive.

A dead end for the environment I was trying out.
I spent some time (too much) trying to get a nice splash around the whale leaping up out of the water.
I will have to call this one a failure. The closest I got was using a combo of Blender's fluids - edited and smoothed with xsi's tools. I tried a few test renders but I don't have the pc horsepower or time (or skills) to get it right.
Have to figure something else out for the final render.

Small update to keep my thread alive.

pilot sled and control sticks to go inside the robo whale.
some uv and color testing in there

Looks very nice whkguamusa. In the final render you might want to lighten the craft color a bit so we can see the nifty details. - You can quit later, when time runs out; You got some time... keep it goin :-)

1. Out of the Whale-Dream

*"Makakai, are you ready?"

*Jacob ignored the tiny whirrings of motors and valves in his metal cocoon. He lay still. The water lapped gently against the bulbous nose of his mechanical whale, as he waited for an answer.....

*"Yesss... let'sss do it!" came the warbling, squeaky voice, at last.

*He came down near Makakai with a great splash. She whistled a shrill trinary welcome. Jacob let the rockets shut off automatically and resumed the purely mechanical leaping beside her.

*For a time they moved in unison. With each leap Makakai grew more daring, performing twists and pirouettes during the long seconds before they struck the water.

*They sailed high together. He could see her tiny eye behind a plastic window as her waldo-machine twisted before slicing into the water. He followed an instant later........
