Ok... I have been having this trouble and I am curious what is the right way to do something in Maya.

I have a bunch of object I want to Mirror over the X axis. I group them. Duplicate the group and then change the 2nd groups X Scale to -1. This looks perfect, all seems well. Then I go and Freeze Transformations and the 2nd group of objects turn invisible. Flipping their normals don't make them visible, nor assigning a new texture. Nor does Set Normal to Face.

How do I fix this problem or mirror over X axis without this problem? The Mirror tool doesn't work for me because it snaps the duplicate to the furthest point on the x axis, not 0.

I have to freeze the objects because the model is for a Game engine and can't have -1 for Scale.

I dunno....maybe delete their history?

i had the same problem some weeks ago , i think either the grouping was the problem , so try to ungroup them before freezing , or the problem was that it wasnt independent duplicates but references - i got it fixed - somehow

Are you making the object in another program and then bringing it into Maya? The only time I have had that experience was when I imported ( from LW ) a .obj.

The only fix I was able to do was the Set to Face (which didn't work for you).
So since it is a mirrored object, try to combine it with the other side, after you ungroup it. And then if the normals are black, just flip them. I hope it works for you.

The model was imported from LW. The model was converted using Deep Exploration.

It's strange that imported data would act up once you delete it's history. For the mean time I am just adding a cube on the X axis and then using the PolyMirror tool. It involve some clean up and I have to run Seperate after I mirror anything but it is working. I just wish I knew what was happening to that surface data. The mesh looks like all the faces are deletes. So all I have is edges.

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what is going on there. But I imported a light wave model, one of the free ones the have made available to us here. And teh faces turned semi black as soon as I imported it and deleted the history. I used the set to face option and the black disappeared, but now that I have it skinned, if the faces deform too much they start to turn black again. The only cure for me was to use poly smooth and it all goes away. Now of course, the mesh is too dense to interact with quickly, but it will look alright when I render.

Did you try and combine it after you mirrored it? It was jsut a thought, but it might work.
