Ok well hello!! Im working on this onion here that i made in zbrush. Its in maya now in its lowest subdivision so i can fix the UV's which are screwy.

I've tried so many times to do this but i wanted the texture to come to a point at the bottom and to a point at the top. You can see from the bottom image what i mean. Also the point it comes together at the top... you can see it happens below the top and swirls around.

I am extremely new to UVing but have seen many videos/tutorials but still havent made much progress here. I'm hoping someone can say, ITS A PROBLEM WITH THE MODEL, maybe than I'll know its a problem I can fix. I've pulld and tugged on the UVs but the texture has no desire to do what i want it to. Of course this isnt a very complex model(level 6 in displacement map has nice detail), lots of character model tutorials are cut up into numerous pieces. Doesnt this just need a single seam and to be flattened? or do i need to cut it into 2 pieces?

http://www.dainelmatuk.com/onion_bottom.jpgI also attached an image of the UV Editor in Maya after applying a Cylinder projection which seems to give me the closest result to what i want. Here's the texture. i have it repeating numerous times to give the appearace of the skin.

hi
u first need to unwrap the object properly. The top and bottom ends can be separated out ( like spikes or pyramids) .Just check the unwrap of a sphere.
Then give it a relax Uv's or unfold uv.which ever works better for the model.
hope this helps:)

thanks for the reply rosewalt. will give it a try when i get home from work.

Do i need to separate the 2 halves of the onion, flatten, and than rejoin them?
