Here is my rough concept. Two kids are out in the forest catching bugs and end up catching a tiny alien. This is the initial rough sketch.

Here I've refined the sketch of the two boys. This is what I'm planning on working off of.

I've blocked in the colors roughly here. I will refine and tighten everything up as I go. It will give you an idea of the wooded area they are in.

Nice concept. I liek the colors so far too. I think you could open up the canvas a bit more, not keep it so tight around the characters. Oh, and don't forget to pound some air-holes in the lifd of the jar so the alien can breath!:)

I like the concept! hope to see a final rendering!

Thanks Walrus, I was thinking it looked a bit cramped as well. I think it will look better with a bit more space.

I've opened up the canvas a bit to give a bit more room around the boys. I've also started to get down to painting the details. Time is short so I don't have too much time to mess around with stuff.

Nice! The colors and characters looks great, and the concept is very effective. The bigger canvas size does make it look less cramped, but i wonder how the alien's gonna read, being so small in such a big picture... Wish i had some helpful advice.
Good luck.

I've changed the trees around a bit. I just didn't like how they were before. I think this way looks a bit more natural. Other than that, just plugging away.

I was looking at the background and I realized that the large tree on the left would block the light hitting the boy on the left. So I moved things around. What do you think?

I've decide to change the background up a bit. I've done this for several reasons.
1. I thought it was looking too busy and competing with the characters.
2. I felt it was just going to take too long with all the trees and details.
3. I don't think the lighting was working out with the hard light on the boys, yet them bing in a forest.
4. It was just bugging me and I wanted to change it.

So I though I would put the boys on a farm. I'll have a butterfly net on the ground by the boys. I also wanted to tie in a crop circle on the field in the background.

Now it's time to start on the alien.

New background is much more impresive for me then first.

This is awesome idea , the new background is very nice. I did like the wooded one too. The current one looks a bit right heavy with the characters and building more to the right of the image. Have you tried flipping it so you get the depth of the fields ( ha ha pardon my pun) behind the characters and the building on the left in the midground?

jixrik, Paul4wood and Ataulfo: Thanks, I'm glad you like it and think the new background is better. I like it better as well. I can't wait to finish it up.

Ivy00: Thanks, you have a good point, I'll play around with the barn on the other side. I was hoping to balance it out with the crop-circle. We'll see how it goes.

I reaaaally like the new background. I think that an outdoor scene with such a clear sky calls for a more intense light on the characters, stronger contrast and blue-tinted shadows. Either that or a clouded sky. I could be wrong....

Good luck, but hurry, time is running out!

I'm just about done. I'm trying to decide if I should go with or without the barn. Here is without.

This is with the barn. I know which way I'm leaning, but I'd like to get some other opinions. Thanks.

The brothers had overheard the adults talking about some strange things happening around the county. Livestock would go missing and then be discovered days later up in a tree or on a barn roof. Strange markings appeared in fields overnight and people claimed to see mysterious lights in the night sky. The boys didn't pay too much attention to these rumors, being more interested in catching frogs and collecting bugs. That is, until they caught something they didn't expect to.

Thanks all, I'm glad I was able to finish. I thought the version without the barn was better as well, so that was the one I decided to go with. Good luck to everyone else too.

OKMER: you are absolutly right. The sign in the field wasn't right. I looked at some more crop circles and realized I had it inverted. it's usally lighter on the inside of the circle. I hope this looks better.

Xsien, thanks.

For the sake of completeness, here is a reference image that i did not take myself. I found it on Photolibrary.com. image number: is4086rf-00047651-001. I needed a nice field reference.
