View Full Version : Rendering : Network rendering across different OS's
kevin3d 05-07-2003, 07:20 PM I have heard that it's not a good idea to network render on systems running different versions of windows, specifically NT 4.0 & Windows 2000....some pixels may be rendered with different colors.
I now have access to a network running XP (home ed.), Win2000, and win98. Will there be any problems? I'd probably use the Win2000 box to manage the rendering. I'll be using Max 4 but may be upgrading to max 5 soon
Thanks in advance.

i think in an ideal world as far as renderfarms go you should have machines that are all the same, same processor, config etc. At least thats what i heard.
I think only rendering on the same os is probably advisable. But having said that we run on 2000, and there can still be some problems with reflections etc due to all machines being different spec.
hope thats some help

I render across a farm that has both XP and Win2k running on them. To date no serious problems (other than typical backburner stuff) I have not mixed any Win98 machines into the mix though.
forgot to mention. The machines range from a dual P2 500 up to AMD 2600+

It's more of a problem when the CPU's have different byte orders ..mainframes systems and RISC processors are Big Endian whereas Intel and AMD's are little endian. This has an effect on the floating point math.

I've read somewhere on discreet's readme file. Can't remember
exactly. That you shouldn't mix differect processors, (Athlon and P4) because there is a difference in optimization that causes different result in rendering.
Not sure if this is still correct. You Might want to chech with Discreet

Is this a specific problem with MAX? I have never noticed a difference between Pentiums and AMDs with other software but I don't have any P4's.

I think I saw somewhere that the problem arose if you used the SSE setting in the renderer.

So if I understand right if I have 3 difrent AMD but same OS (win2k) on them I can use them for rendering.
