Look up "Parameter Wiring" in the online help. That's just one way of doing it, and probably the easiest for the novice to get working.

I'll offer one bit of advice that the help file won't give you: before doing any wiring, set your animation range to something large, like -1000 to 10,000 frames. The reason for this is that wire controllers will only work during the active range at the time they are defined (they can be changed afterward, but it's much less of a headache to set the range first). When done wiring, you can safely set the range back to something more reasonable:)
