Is it possible to lengthen a curve tangent? So that its effect on the curve is stronger.

Yes, but it's a bit more complicated than in xsi for example.
In the Graph editor select your key on the animation curve, go to menu Curves and choose Weighted Tangents. Now select the tangent and click the icon named Free Tangent Weight.
Now you can have longer tangents.

I have always found it better to add more keyframes...than to play with tangent lengths. Sometimes you could go back to that file and forget you weighted the tangents and edit it and mess things up...besides, with more specifically placed keyframes I get better sontrol anyway...

I've always liked keeping my curves as clean as possible... But I'll try adding more keyframes instead.

Now that I'm at it, is there an easy way to copy and mirror keys from one object to another? (like an IK handle or something like that)
