View Full Version : Performing to a Song
indipops 03-18-2008, 03:03 PM Hi guys! I'm new to the forums :)
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on animating to a song. I am currently working on a 20 second piece, and in order for it truly to convey character i obviously have to show him thinking and living, but i'm find it hard to distinguish as when performing to a song alot of action is driven by the lyrics.... just wondered if anyone had any tips or tried anything similar..
Thanks!

one thing you can do is overlay your animation over the original, you can also put the original in a video editor it should have something like find edges which will give you nothing but edges which might make it easier to see the motions

If I were to take up a task like this I think the first thing I would do is lock myself up in a room by myself, record myself on film and go through the emotions myself as I sang. Then I would recall those emotions in my mind and sketch out the main story-telling poses I want to make sure I achieve on paper. I then review the film and see if there are any subtlties I can incorporate into my thumbnail sketches. Then I would burn those thumnail sketches in my brain and then record myself re-enacting the song making sure I nail those gestures and poses in my sketches. Once I get like 2 satisfactory takes, I convert those into quicktime format and study the timing by scrubbing through the slider, making sure I keep in mind what pose and emotions need to be at what frames. (quick time is so indispensible for fram-by-frame playback). Then I get to blocking out my animation using the quicktime reference. Once the first pass is blocked out, I compare it against my reference to make sure the poses and the emotions stick perfectly with the timing of my quicktime reference. Then I have a few people look at it to make sure it reads to anyone "other" than me. Then I make adjustments based on the critiques, and then move on to the next pass. Rinse and repeat.
I hope this helps lol.
Good luck!

Thanks, that's i've done a bit of the filming already, but i shall get to it in some more depth. The scrubbing through thing would be so much easier then the slow-mo camera option :D, sounds like common sense, but i think that went out the window when i was trying to learn everything at once hehe.
Thank you a lot, really appreciate it!
