View Full Version : Human head: texturing problems
pixel8 05-07-2003, 02:59 PM Hi all
I've just finished my first photorealistic human head modelling and texturing project for school and am not really happy with the texturing of it and have spent quite some time playing around in Photoshop repainting the maps and researching techniques on the internet but still am not happy with the results.
I'm studying Maya but have used Lightwave for about 18 months on and off and in some ways prefer it to Maya. I've read Leigh's texturing tutorials over and over and they were a big help but I'm still a bit confused by the whole texturing process.
I was wondering if someone could offer some advice as to how to improve the realism of my head.
In the zip file attachment is a sample render and the relevant colour, bump and specular maps.
Thanks
Paul

Textures really don't look that bad. I would work on his mouth. Remodel it give him some lips. Also the inside of your mouth seems to be glowing. I would also work on the hair it seems very thick. Paint some sort of hair line into your texture to help with the blending. Also your lighting setup seems to have some odd shadows I would look up a tutorial on a simple 3 light setup.

Hi timsvw
Thanks for your reply
The brief called for a photoreal human head....so I did my own head and while I'm pretty happy with it for a first up effort....it's by no mean photoreal....
Good call on the mouth detailing....I ran out of time for the modelling part of the assignment.....but for my demo-reel I'll definitely be adding more detail in the modelling....
My hair is pretty thick but you're right it doesn't fade in and out...it's all or nothing.....I'll repaint that map to give a blending in effect....
I'm using a 3 point lighting setup I saw in a tutorial that looked pretty nice.....just checked and I forgot to unhide the mouth cavity....oops!...so that explains the glowing mouth....but why does the light show thru there....the bottom of the neck is open but all the lights are well above that opening and shouldn't cast light up inside the head....maybe the lights are going thru the head??

yeah, the model has no upper lip at all.....
i agree with the hair point..
also the texture seems to have horizontal stripes along the forehead.... dosn't look right.
i think the problem is, is that the model isn't perfect, so it makes the texture look off... no matter how good the texture is, the model will still look "off" if the anatomy isn't right :hmm:
