What version of Max are you using? R4 includes the MultiRes modifier, which works somewhat like Optimize, but with better retention of mapping coordinates and more explicit control of face/vertex count. You might end up with a rather chaotically laid-out mesh, though.

Otherwise, there's the tried and true (although tedious) method of cleaning up your mesh by hand:scream:

Hmm, what does optimize/multires do?
Increase the quality or something?

It doesn't increase the quality, it decreases the face count. Quality can actually kind of suffer with its use. It's good for some things, though, especially stationary objects (objects that won't be animated) for games.

I find the multi-res modifier works very well for lowering the face count. I prefer it to optimize as it seems to be more flexible.

I actually find optimize kinda hard to control at times... depending on the topolgy of an object, optimize can sometimes stop reducing faces no matter how you tweak the settings. Multires, on the other hand, does a much better job. It's a bit slower, since it has to pre-calc the low-res mesh, but it does a great job. I recently used it in a project where out character artists needed to animate a pair of characters inside a cathedral. The cathedral was a fairly detalied model. Slapping multires mods all over the placed gave me a very light environment to work with. That modeled was Xrefed through the project into individual shots. Optimize didn't work as well.
