View Full Version : Environment - "Monsters Do Not Exist"
Still extremely in progress right now - just wanted some C&C on the general feel. As you can prolly tell, lighting isn't one of my strong points. Anyway, the scene's taken from a graphic novel called "Monsters Do Not Exist" by Carlos Trillo and Zalo Mandizabal. The characters aren't quite done yet - the Barker needs textures and rigging, I just put him in for reference and scale. I'm trying for a kind of "creepy cartoonish" kinda thing... And now I'll shut up and let everybody see the picture... :surprised:

Except for that blue panel on the barker's booth, I think you've captured the creepy cartoonish atmosphere pretty well.
That panel just sort pulls your attention away from everything else.
Thanks for the comments! I'm working on the booth front right now - should be able to update in an hour or two... Biggest thing I'm trying to do right now is model the tree and the lampost a bit better with light, without killing the scheme as it stands....
Thanks again - update soon!
Last update for a while, as LW just ate my object files. great. anyway, any C&C on this would be greatly appreciated...

The skull bulls-eye in the booth seems a little over-the-top to me. I think the "creepy cartoonish" atmosphere is nicely conveyed by the sky, shadowy backdrops, and textures. 'course that's just my opinion take it for what it's worth :)
Are the gaps in the ground intentional?

Real nice!
I do not know the novel but it looks real good
About lightning, i'd add some back light (so you can see the shape of the background) and maybe some fog, some low fog where you can't see your feet, you know?
Thanks for taking the time to take a look and reply!
PixelThis - The skull in the dartboard is part of the original design - there's actually skulls everywhere, so it makes a little more sense in full context, I guess... And, no, the gaps are entirely accidental. I'm not real happy with the ground right now, go I'm gonna be working on that as I go, I think. Glad to know the feel is coming over correctly!
jampoz - Thanks! (Love your subway bedroom - was just looking through the thread yesterday :) ) I was playing around with fog yesterday just before my computer crashed out ... spent the rest of the day playing restore.
More updates to come!

I like the eerie mood.,. ;) keep up and fill lots of details... some
rats wondering
Thanks for the good comments! Well, LW only ate a couple revisions, so I didn't have to go too far back (must remember - more frequent backups :banghead: ) - anyway, here's a small update. Tried to finesse the lighting a bit more, tweak some of the surfaces just a bit - looking to go a bit more sinister now. By the way - Maximus Groff - I love the idea of one or two rats just kinda wandering around the midway. Definately gonna find a wa y to work that in! Thanks! Anyway, off to do some more character modeling on the guys living here... hopefully more updates soon!

p.s. - just looking at it now, I've got to add a lot more ground fog....

Don't do the fog by procedural texture
Use a particle or a gizmo device, you could use afterburn or pyro in Max
