View Full Version : New to Parenting in C4D
rickmorgan 03-17-2008, 02:35 PM I'm sure this is quite easy but I having trouble finding out how to parent an object and have that object "jump" into position with the parent object. For example, I have a null as the partent and the null is already in X 10 Y 10 Z 10 and maybe even some rotation. I have another object sitting at 0,0,0 and when I parent that object to the null I want it to move into position & rotation with the null. Not just continue to sit at 0,0,0.
Is this possible?
Coming from LightWave there was an option called "parent in place" where if that was checked the child object would stay where is was when you parented it. But if "parent in place" was unchecked the child object would move into position with the parent.
Thanks

transfer function does this....regardless of the parent/child relationship
don't know of an automagical way to do it

Just use a constraint for this. There is a parent constraint available if you right-click on the objet and add a "character tags>constraint" tag.
Just play with the weight value if you want the object to follow its parent or not.

Coll, thanks everyone! Looks like the transfer function is just what I needed!

I use a couple of simple scripts, Reset Rotation and Reset Position with buttons docked to menu toolbar.
Drop object under null and click.
Cheers, Alan.

In C4D under the character menu is 'reset PSR' command. I have that as a button in my toolbar. Just make something a child of a parent then hit that button. Done.
If you want to see it in action. I do it in an example tutorial here:

Very cool! That is even better than using the transfer function. Thanks for showing me this.

I just tried dropping a cube into a Null and tried the "Reset PSR" and it did nothing; the cube and null are in their separate locations. Is there something more I need to do?

Hmmm, it works for me. I just tried what you said and it works.
1) create a null and a cube
2) move the null somewhere
3) drag the cube under the null to parent
4) select the cube and hit Character -> Reset PSR and the cube jumps into place where the null is.

Ah! I had selected the null. Yeah.
Cube selected and it works.
Thanks Rick
