I never figured this out, but is there a way to zoom with my mousewheel in a smooth way, instead of those standard steps forward/backward ?

Somethine Maya-like would be nice, but I can't figure this out.

CTRL+ALT+wheel pressdown and than move mouse forwad and back.

alternatively you can press ALT + 'Z' (and release) to get into zoom mode. Then move forward/ backward with leftmouse button pressed down.
