Wings usually creates .wings_as that are Auto Save files.
.wings_bup are BackUP files.
I think wings creates the backup files when there are already a .wings_as that wasn't used and it needs to create another .wings_as file. This is based on what I've seen in my computer, I havn't read it in any documentation.
Somtimes when you have a .wings_as file that is newer that the original file, wings asks if you want to use it instead. If you say no, when wings wants to create an autosave file, it makes a backup of the existing one.
At least I think that's what happens.
Best regards.
A .bup is an copy off the previous saved file.
Example:
create a cube and save it to cube.wings
smooth the model and save it .
you should now have a cube.wings which contains the smothed cube and a cube.wings_bup which contains the unsmoothed cube.
Rename the cube.wings_bup to unsmothed_cube.wings and open it in wings.
So it's backup for users that makes save by mistake, I added it after a number of smoothed saves before smoothed preview existed. :-)
