View Full Version : DWIII - 2D - ReK0 - noneshallpass
I know I am starting a little late but I hope I can still pull through with something decent.
I have chosen to do the stalker type of character. My artifact weapon(s) will be Fire/Lava
Ok so this is the latest of my final image. I will keep updating this as I go as well as add new ones to the forums.

Ok here is my first series of sketches. spent a while coming up with the first look and ideas. I am thinking i will keep this claw idea as his main weapon system. his Artifact Weapon. i changed the type to shadow.
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/dominance/sketch1.jpg
Here is my second concept sketch. I like his uniform in this one a bit more as well as the weapons. They are made of magic and manifest when they are called. they are perfectly sharp in every sense of the word. they cut through anything much like a light saber yet their backside work well as a shield.

Here is a head study with a couple idea of how it might look from the side.

Here are a few pose ideas plus a little more definition on the gear he is wearing.

Nice sketches so far. I especially like that first shot with the claws upraised and the face sketch to the right of it. Good luck with the rest of the details!

Cool sketches. You're placing the logo on the head and equipping dual blades too? Of course the weapons differ a lot from there. Great minds think...
heh :).
Hey David, really nice sketches, and the claws concept is cool !! I like a lot the armor, and my vote is for the scared faces :) Again, great work, and looking forward for more updates :D Cheers mate !
Hi, Thank for the kind comments guys! Im doing what I can to catch up.
Im trying to decide what weapon to go with. Magic seems to be key in this battle so manifesting weapons seem like something more unique than a magic sword. But i drew the sword anyway and ill take the next day to decide what i should do. gimme some opinions on that matter if you guys dont mind :)
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/dominance/sketch5.jpg
I also wanted to do a quick color. I think Im starting to figure out who this guy really is. He seems to be some sort of gatekeeper. Exactly which category he falls in i havent decided but I like the idea of him being a shaman of sorts. Red skinned Red magic, lava/fire are the magic maybe.

Nice mate. That first sketch immediately made me think of that shan yu guy out of Mulan
Nasty.
I like the intense colours you've used, gives him a good sense of power and energy.
:)
Thanks lockwyn! Ya i dig the colors too. Did a face study right now. Gonna do more later to see what i want in the final concept.

Nice colors! The team palette works well on this guy. Some of the red may be a bit overboard - like I'm not sure whether you really need it up and down the blade''s handle - but of course you'll be adding more in for his hands and feet (or at least I assume so as his skin is red.) Anyhow, coming along well. I like the rendering job on his skin in these last shots. Keep going!
Thanks walrus, Ya Im still tryin to decide what exactly I want to do there. I just wrote the story for my character, I thought that might help me make a few decisions. Let me know what u think.
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/dominance/story.jpg
Alright finished the colors. The story suggests these guys are the elite fighters of their world yet this one has a ragged look. I will be having him in battle or right after so this should suit it well.

the concept looks nice, but if I may, I sugest you should concentrate more on the magic elemnet. So far it looks like a powerfull worrior without magical power.
Thanks for the comment. My character is a warrior class or possibly stalker, im still undecided. Either way the magical uses are limited. So I did what I thought was in line with those themes without going over the edge with it. I wanted a powerful look, but more powerful when hes using his weapon.
Here is my first concept for the royal legion halls. This is where this character primarily guards. I expect to have a lot of foliage but i wont go into detail of that really until i start my composition. I think this setting gives him some place to be anyway.
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/dominance/setting.jpg
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/dominance/setting2.jpgi built the scene in 3d make to try and get a few good camera angles. didnt do a whole lot yet. Figuring out the scenerio I want him to be in and the action and pose etc. Basically composition time. I will start sketching the final render soon.
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/domination/setting2.jpg
I have started the final pose. I know the angle isnt entirely dramatic but i wanted something that can show off his confidence in the face of what seems to be an unbeatable battle. I have tried to tie it in with the dominance story. He is fighting metal creatures that came through the portal.
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/dominance/final1.jpg
k well i think im gonna make it real hectic for this guy. got my work cut out for me thats for sure lol

Nice sketches but I don't think they want an environment, they just wan't a pedistal and a character on it. Cheers

Nice touch by drawing in the skeleton in pose. You're working fast. Keep it up :D.
Hey David, really cool model sheet, I like a lot the armor concept (a bit mix on samurai and beduin warrior :D), looks awesome. And nice studie for your final pose, great! Really awesome work. Cheers!!

As others have pointed out, I like the one with the claws, still nice work. Just I felt that had a great silhouette.

Great stuff, love the designs of the building. Good pose of the character.
Good luck.
Loukor - hey thanx, ya it the environment design was more for myself, for getting the ideas of where he should be in my mind.
RaresHalmagean - Thanks! ya i started really late. hope i keep the speed up.
Ferx - Thank you! :D happy to have your support
El-Ruco - Great to hear! thx
robert thornely - ya i kinda like that design too but felt like i would have more fun with this one instead. tho i think final images that one might be good too
TerryWu - Hahaha, ya he does eh. the story explains why, it is required basically.
jttruong85 - Thanks! :D sorta winged it with the buildings, took some design elements from a lot of different places.
I thought I would post an update. didnt work on it all day yesterday or today, needed a break. but i did find an hour to work on it and i plan to spend tomorrow getting as far as i can.
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/dominance/final3.jpg
Here is the newest version. I changed the composition so its a lot closer. I am still thinking of changing it more in the future.

Het Rek0, that's coming along really nicely. I actually thought from your sketch that he had some sort of magic force coming out of his right hand. I know that this is still wip and there will be adjustments, but for me you did such a nice render on the enermy getting sliced that it seems to makes the hero character less of a focus. Keep it up Rek0 and look forward to seeing the finished rendered piece.
Thank you terry. Can anyone comment on the newest render for me about the colors? on my CRT monitor at home its nice and light but on my print calibrated LCD monitor on work its quite dark, a lot more contrast. Not sure which i should go with.
http://www.bestofthebeast.com/dominance/sketch9.jpg
Ive asked around and it seems the CRT normal version goes over best so I will do it in that range but slightly lighter.
Here are the final modeling and concept sheets i posted. Gonna work on the final a lot trying to flesh it out.
I know the concept sheet wont win any awards but hey what can ya do haha.

Good updates -I liked the darker looking render as that could give you more leeway to push any glows you may want to use.
Thanks Mcjake!
Heres a new update, started getting the background going, gonna try to make it kick ass along with the characters. trying to figure out where to add more characters.

It's looking nice, David. Very dynamic. And I can see why you brought the camera closer in: It shows off the main character more, and less beasties to draw as time runs out... :) The whole thing is feeling like it could use some stronger values to make the characters stand out right now. Noneshallpass's values are really similar to those of the wall behind him, and it makes him abit hard to read. Squint at it and his whole body gets sucked into that mountianous rock (except for his head-wrap.) I thought your other settings (LCD Brighter) made him stand out more. Anyhow, just my thoughts on it... keep going!
Thanks walrus. I updated and decided to keep working on it more so im hoping you might comment more. at this point im looking for the serious problems and help to make it as awesome as possible. Thanks in advance!

Whats the glow below the one monster from? A magical device?
The characters are starting to blend into the rockwall behind them. Maybe atmopsphric depth in the ravine (Or shadow) would push the backgound cliff back and help contrast the disk of light.
Spamming out!
Thanks Jake, You make a lot of valid points. I need to define that light more as a magical lighting. I think i will have to do some vfx for it. And yes I am struggeling a bit to get my character to stand out. it think your right some atmosphere right there might help draw them out. the light is snug against the wall and so are the characters. in fact noneshallpass's left foot is against the wall so that should say how close they are. It will take fanessing but hopefully i can pull it off :D

Well, I can comment more, but I don't have much new to add: Dark brown character in front of dark brown background = hard-to-see character. What about making his brown outfit a slate grey? I also like Jake's suggection about fogging out the background more. Anything you can do to make the character pop (unless he's a Stalker and is supposed to blend into his environment to be stealthy? :) )
Good luck!
Thanks Walrus. Ya thats the main issue is he blends in too much. Im going through some art styles that i think match mine and seeing how their characters stand out. I think I just need to focus more lighting on my guy and then add some atmosphere behind them. Some people use a lot more black than I do and I wonder if I should employ more to make it more dynamic. We will see. Thanks for the comments!

Wow, I love what you have. Very inspiring! As far as what you mentioned earlier about black, to be honest, I dont think it will be going in a right direction for what you have now. Of course this is only an opinion but with your way of rendering currently, more black would actually flaten it out more instead of bringing it out.
Go darker, to push out that light, but solid black could also be harmful I think.
Thanks Gatlingg.
I took a few days breaks from this to stew and figure out what i wanted to do. i am a little farther now, started adding a lot more effects which i think make it much more dynamic and less boring. I came up with magic for those lights and tried to show that by having the one monster jumping through it on the left. I added nice rubies to his armour. Bright red lighting which shows the power. Comments a re still welcome. Desiding where to go with it again and what needs to be tweaked and fixed. the window at the top sort of bugs me a bit now. I might need to make it larger, taller maybe.

Annnnd bam. The break was good for you! Everyone needs one. =D This is coming along really nice. As far as your window up top, I think its the exit side that has me curious. Is it just a checkpoint watch tower and not a big structure interior-wise?
If anything I think the size is fine, but the placement of the exit window is maybe too centered. It gives the wall/building a thinnish appearance on the outside. Also, maybe atouch of atmospheric light on the interior shadow arc could push the debth more? I mean, there is a beautiful sky with warm lighting hitting that wall over thar. Cheers!
haha thanks gatlingg. yes i had some atmosphere in there at one point but erased it for one reason or another. i think you might be right about it.
They just extended the war 5 more days. This means I am way ahead of schedule and need to figure out how to make the best of that time. I suppose composing more "beasties" into the scene might be a good idea. Any suggestions?
Ok spent some time on it again today. here is the newest. any comments or critiques will still help.
