That question's already been aswered, Keitaro. Try rereading through this thread, specifically post #136. :)

doesit matter that i'm on a mac and don't have windows.
No it does not matter if you use a Mac. I use a Mac (using Fetch as my FTP software) and it worked fine.

The way I see it, it is important to name your file correctly so your filename is exactly like how they tell you to name it. And after it is uploaded, wait a while before clicking on the button so the server has time to decompress and process it. In my case, I waited about a minute

Hey there :\
Wanted to ask about the non-commercial versions of XSI that were mentioned.

From the SoftImage page at http://www.softimage.com/products/xsi/promo/challenge22/
it's mentioned thatIf you finish the Challenge (i.e. you submit an final entry and qualify for judging), your license will be converted to a permanent non-commercial version. You can keep using XSI for as long as you like.

Just wanted to ask if there's different criteria on whether an image qualifies for judging or if all you had to do is complete the challenge. Also how do you find out if you're elligible for the non-commercial license and is there going to be any announcements or news on this?

Cheers.

hi, i had alot of problems while rendering my main scene at the resolution that was requested and ran out of time, i had to lower my samples to at least get something out to photoshop to start my final composition, i knew it was going to be a little blocky but its sadly all that my computer could handle as it chashed when saving the file after 27 hours of rendering on production quality (i know i need to upgrade..) a batch render would have been the safest bet but is i said theres no time left :( .
i didn't know i wasnt supposed to lower my samples untill i went to submit my final image DO NOT upsample your images to achieve higher resolution. If you cannot reach the desired full-page resolution, just send in what you have. i submited what i could :( not that my image is print worthy or anything but i hope i dont get disqualified, i did what i could with what was available to me.
i wil try to render out a better image in the time thats left but i dont think ill make it.

Unfortunately can’t upload final image with FTP

Program can’t access web site. Explanation:

Unable to resolve host name

This error means that the hostname you are trying to connect to cannot be resolved to an IP address. (Hostnames are resolved to IP addresses by a DNS (Domain Name Server). If you have verified that the hostname is correct, there may be a problem with your DNS server (or with your ISP's DNS server if you are a standalone user). It may be unable to resolve hostnames to IP addresses.

I already contact my internet service provider and they admit conflict between IP addresses. They promise resolve the issue, but I don’t know how long it take. Would it be possible submit final TIF later, if they don’t resolve all internet issues on time? I already uploaded final image in gallery.

Please tell what rules say about that?
Thanks. Natalia Agalakov

It says on the rules in the challenge, if you don't know what FTP is, get help with this before the challenge. And so that's what I'm trying to do.. so can someone please tell me what FTP is and how it works? It seems like i'm the only one that doesn't know, but i'll never find out otherwise.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
Basically its a robust method for transferring large files. In order to be able to upload an image via FTP its recommended that you download a FTP client. A decent one to use would be Filezilla.

Most FTP Clients are sort of like the Windows Explorer when you browse the files on your harddrive. Its really simple. You usually have your local system displayed on the left and the remote system displayed on the right. You just enter the correct hostname, username and password and connect. After that you can just transfer files via drag & drop.

Hey guys, i got a big problem . The ftp-upload seems to be broken or something.
I tried it several times and i always get this:

I made a new tif in photoshop and everythings fine now. The old tif was broken i think.)

I tried it in different sizes . All upload-informations are correct... only the result is this mess.. damn!

Sounds like you remembered to upload your final TIF file but not the final JPG with the story description. When you do that, if it's not too late, make sure to select "Final Image" as your milestone. Without that, well, it'll give you the error you're getting.

Will the judges let the participants know which rank they have even if they don't win in any of the categories?

e.g. 12th place, 15th place, etc.

Or will the only ranking be "Master" and "Excellence" Award.

Master, excellence, and couple of honorable mentions (I've been told). rather than that there will not be any actual place anouncing. like 53th, etc.

Please clarify the directions for final tif... it says also 3 samples/pixel - do the images in my WIP count, or do i also send 3 WHAT... with, final image?
3 samples = R, G, B.

i can't seem to get the image to upload. i tried using fetch for the ftp thing but when i do it itsays that its uploaded but it doesn't say anything different when i log in on here to check. any suggestions for another ftp to use and if it got uploaded correctly will it say so when i log in on here.
Did you use the filename you were given? If not, you need to let me know what name so I can find it.

And after it is uploaded, wait a while before clicking on the button so the server has time to decompress and process it. In my case, I waited about a minute

It's done on-demand, unless you wait a lot longer (15-20+ minutes).

Just wanted to ask if there's different criteria on whether an image qualifies for judging or if all you had to do is complete the challenge. Also how do you find out if you're elligible for the non-commercial license and is there going to be any announcements or news on this?

We'll talk about this a bit longer after the challenge is finished. (Possibly after the video category has closed too, we haven't got a fixed date).

i didn't know i wasnt supposed to lower my samples untill i went to submit my final image
It doesn't say not to down-sample, it says not to up-sample :)

The TIFF submission area is still unofficially open while I finish cleaning up some behind-the-scenes stuff. You'll know it's too late when the FTP becomes unable to be logged in to.

where it says ' username .....' is it giving you an example or do i copy that in ? can't remember from last time.
Use that one.

I made a new tif in photoshop and everythings fine now. The old tif was broken i think.

The image system can't process multi-layer TIFFs or anything else special like that. Straight flattened RGB, and nothing else folks!

Did you submit the final JPEG? Did you use the correct name for your final TIFF?

Jumblez - Did you click on Submit Entry and then on the links to "Submit Tif file?" If you do that, you will go through a few menus to confirm your address and name and then you will be given a username and password to use for your FTP upload. It will say this:

FTP Information

Hostname: challenge.cgnetworks.com
Username: challenge20
Password: uplifted

It will also give you a filename that you have to name your Zip file before you upload it. Of course it will also tell you that image uploads are closed because the deadline for images was 2 days ago. But that's why the rules also stated, as you noted in an earlier post, "It says on the rules in the challenge, if you don't know what FTP is, get help with this before the challenge." Still, there are exceptions, so good luck getting your image submitted! (but next time, you might want to take your own advice and figure this stuff out before it's too late! ;) ) Good luck!

HI there!
My question is regarding those who could not finish their image on time!
I was wondering if it's possible to continue my thread, using private hosting

to Wip_3d section and continue there?
Thanks in advance, and looking forward to the next challenge!

ok..everything looks like is going the right way,but now i have no confirm of my upload status but the ftp program "upload ok" message.
There are ways to check the status on cgtalk o cgchallenge pages?

tnx.

Yes, you can.

There are ways to check the status on cgtalk o cgchallenge pages?

Go back to the Submit Final Image page, it should show you a thumbnail of your image. (If it shows nothing, you probably used the wrong filename, or uploaded a RAR not a ZIP).

Final submission should look like:
1st submission 1 video including 30 second short trailer+max 90 second making of
2nd submission 1 video including 90 second full trailer

Should we put whole making of including scenes and eg models from full trailer inside 1st movie?

As it happens, I'm in the middle of writing an email alerting everyone entered to a one-week deadline that we decided on (what with all the server issues last weekend). Otherwise it's a bit unfair, especially to those who don't have a lot of time during the week.

hey Mibus,

Even that I planned to have all the work done on time I can understand the "server crash issue" to add extra time for video challengers. Especially to those who are awaiting wip feedback to improve their skills. Now the question is:

I am using XSI ESS provided for this challenge and there is "only 10 days left to end of this special license" so I guess that is all I can get from extended deadline ( speaking about 3D job that wants to be polished)

and

Since we extended deadline, will there be any changes in order to get XSI Ess Permanent EDU license? This is very important to me since I am mostly doing this challenge to get it ( I cant really see myself along winners so its my main motivation for this contest LOL )

Thanx for reply

I'm curious - should the honorary mentioned artists keep their hopes up for the awards in the open categories? *excitement*

I'm asking because I guess that the winners of the image category won't be considered for an additional award in the open categories (that as well may be a wrong guess) and I wondered what's the policy concerning the honorary mentions in this respect.

Those with FLV problems: The 'Only the "Image" category...' message is because you're going to the page for TIFF uploads. You need to use the Challenge Uploader to upload your FLVs. If you're still having problems, do the following:

Re-download the Challenge Uploader from the Submit Entries page to make sure you have the latest version
Make sure you fill in all fields (esp. the "Category" dropdown)
Make sure you choose an image to upload with the video (first file selector)
Thumbnail is optional (second selector)
Video is of course mandatory (third selector)
Make sure you've submitted your finished FLV for the "Final" category in the Uploader, not the Concept or WIP ones.
If you still have trouble, shoot me an email with all of your details, and a link to your FLV.
turbinea: If your work is based on Uplift, then you should put that in your credits. You can certainly work on your film after the challenge closes.

digitaldecoy: Nothing is certain! HMs aren't specifically qualified or disqualified from the Open Category prizes in any way.

It's worth noting that I someone confused "second" and "third" (thumb/video) in my last post; it's actually video then thumb. But I'm sure that all of you already noticed that :)

Hi all,

For those of you who took up the XSI free software offer, we're now in the process of going through the list of contestants who completed the Challenge.

We will have XSI licenses deployed to those eligible early next week.

Thank you all for participating! :)

Best regards,

Leo

This was posted at the end of last week, and it's now the middle of the next. Should I be alarmed if I haven't seen anything yet, or are we simply running behind this estimate?

Thanks, and congrats to all the image winners!

Or was there further criteria and judging on who gets the licenses?
Maybe there simply isn't any news yet?
Just got back online and equally wondering on what happened to early this week here :p

Also wondering when we will see the license, I want to keep working with XSI and at the moment, I kind of have to be idle.

But I am guessing, since I haven't seen anyone post that they have it yet and softimage just had us do questionnaires about the challenge and XSI that it shouldn't be to long before we see it. Fingers crossed.

Yes, it wasn't really being alarmed (or impatient for that matter, it takes as long as it takes), but my concerns were along the same as yours. No one else had been posting after the subject, so I thought everyone else might be happily using their license, and I had managed to disqualify myself somehow ;) The fact that other people are curious as well now, makes me feel better.

Sorry for the slight delay. We only just got the final list of challengers eligible from CGSociety so we're now getting ready to deploy these.

Permanent licenses are going out soon.

Just Wondering If your video shows up in the link below does that mean you have passed all
the mile stones and it will be put judging and possible the Xsi Licence or is there an other link
to that.

Anyone on this page has "finished":
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/uplift_universe/entries.php

As long as you submitted all of your required milestones, and either a final TIFF, or a Final Video, you should be OK.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I can see my still image in the "image only" section. I also did the video challenge, spent a lot of time on it, and thought I satisfied all the requirements in the milestones (i.e. work in progress, 30 second trailer, and final video in FLV format uploaded successfully to your site). Actually, my video landed in my portfolio. My understanding is that this is all that was required to get me to the judging stage.

My question is: was there another criterion that kept me out of the finished "video only" section posted for judging? And can my video be added to this section ?

Barry

Hi Barshow,

I'm not an authority on the matter (since I'm not an admin)...but it doesn't appear as though you submitted a final entry.

I viewed your video thread here:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=236&t=615990

Doesn't seem to have any final links in the "Finished Video" posts.....neither one has the standard link to your challenge entry. Did you upload your finished video with the challenge uploader? Looks like something went wrong mate...I think that might disqualify you as well ...maybe the judges will be understanding and consider your final entry....but I can only assume judging is almost finished (it's been a week)....

Barshow

Hi Tyson,

Thank you for your reply. I posted a finished version using the FLV challenge uploader and the date was : 05-11-2008 at 04:49 AM

I uploaded it in the "submit entry" area and specified that it was the final finished video (the last milestone) but perhaps because I sent it quite early, it got missed. I then posted afterwards the trailer in my thread. The link to this final video is quite a bit down in my thread and it just precedes the Trailer link.
Furthermore, when the server was down, I saw some of the threads coming back with less content than they originally had and thought that this will get corrected in time.

When the first part of the image challege came out, we got an email from Robert asking us to contact him if our image is not found under "image only" area. I never received a similar message concerning the video.

eckart: You did not upload a submission for each milestone (you missed the WIP one).

Barshow: Can you please email me <robert@ballisticmedia.net> a copy of the CGUploader you used, and (if you can recall) the URL and date when you downloaded it? Even just a rough guess of either is enough (eg, CGS Wiki, late May). Your upload went (as you noted) to the CGPortfolio system rather than the CGChallenge system.

I'll do some checks to make sure the video is OK and move it over to your thread, and move your entry to be considered "finished", and try to get it in the judging pool (if possible - judging has already commenced).

Hi Mibus

No, the milestones are a perfect way. You have a work in progress status.

In my case I forget to upload an image ( the wip image ) bevore i upload the final video.
Let`s say, if this would be impossible cause you didn`t upload a wip image bevore you upload the final video by the system, so I had done this for sure.- Maybe I was to happy about encoding and uploading the final work just in time...

Anyway, thanks for your help Robert.

What a great competition this was, and I feel priveleged to even have entered. I downloaded the free XSI temporary license for the competition on my laptop that has XP on it. Now for the permanent license, I would like it to be on my desktop which has Vista. Is that going to be a problem? Or can I download the Vista 32-bit XSI software again, and then apply the permanent license when it comes to my desktop? Can anyone help?

Yes it's a whole new license so you'll be able to run it on a new computer.

I wouldn't recommend running XSI on Vista. It'll work - but it wasn't really "made" for Vista. You'll get better performance running it on XP.

Any insight into what I should do? Is this a problem on my end or on Softimage's end? I just fired off an e-mail their way as instructed, and am waiting to hear back. I'm wondering, though, if everyone in the contest is going to have the same problem, or if it's just me :) .

Unfortunately no. The contest was for XSI 6.5 -- note that we only "announced" XSI 7 today and it is not actually ready to ship until later this quarter. We are, however, eager to sponsor another Challenge with CGSociety and will provide XSI 7 in the next Challenge. So as long as CGSociety is willing and you're set to participate, you're good with XSI 7.

In the meantime, I trust you'll enjoy XSI 6.5. We're working hard to get XSI 7 shipped and a downloadable trial version out.

Brian and Barry -- I received your emails on Friday morning and forward it on to have licenses sent to you. Unfortunately, that was the worst possible day as it was the last working day before XSI 7 was announced as we were all frantic that day. Although Christine is extremely efficient in these matters, I can totally understand and empathize if these two licenses fell off her To Do list that day.

Please give Christine a day to catch up. Things are really insane at the moment due to the XSI 7 announce and upcoming events. Christine was here up till past 1am last night helping to get ready for the launch and she worked practically all weekend.

Winners should be contacted within the next week, I'd imagine (if they haven't been already).

The person heading up the Prize contacts is our wonderful Advertising Manager, Scott Stahley. If any winners have any doubts or concerns, drop him a line at scott@ballisticmedia.net. (Make sure to include all of your details).

Where can we now download XSI. The download page has gone now that 7 is released, and it is not listed in the Older Versions section.

Also, being the student/teacher version, is it possible to purchase maintenance? I've E-mailed sails at Softimage, but not had any reply.

Thanks for any help.

Simon

Yeah, a new one would be nice, but I can't even begin to imagine the work load that lies behind these challenges.
I havn't been participating in the latest, but they are so inspirational to follow. I love how open they are. They really gives a unique view behind the scenes of some great pieces.

Traditionally it seems like there are 4-5 month between the challenges, and it's been something like 3 month since Uplift :) - so maybe :P

I'm very anxious to join the next challenge.
I've entered in "Eon", "The Journey Begins", and "Uplift Universe" and haven,t been able to finish a single one due to work deadlines and opening a new studio.
Now i'm all set and have the time to enter and complete the challenge finally.
I really wanted to finish the Uplift Univ erse one, i would have been great at that one with the idea i had for it.
I hope the next one is just as cool.
I know it will be, they all are.
