View Full Version : Maya Backgrounds?!
BadKarma 05-07-2003, 10:04 AM ive seen lots of shorts, rendered images etc, where you have the character and/or object say standing on a desert landscape where it looks to have the desert go allllllllllll the way back to some mountains in the background, i dont think its a good idea to have a very long plane wiv poly mountains, coz you would have to set the clipping value extremely high, and it would take longer to render...
so how else can you do it? please help i have a project to hand in and i really need this...

i dont think changing clipping values of the camera will take longer to render.
it will only be less accurate concerning z-buffer which can lead to real render artifacts in maya.
to workaroud that problem it is wise to render your stuff in passes anyway. so the character with its shadow in one pass, with a very close set of clipping planes and the background in 1 or 2 passes (flat area and mountains) as seperate passes with the correct clipping planes as well..

k cheers alexx i will give dat a shot but i dont know if its write or not... just seems a bit off...

he's right
the best way is to render in layers, and use for the groundplane some DOF, and blur the mountains a bit

DOF? depth of field is that? so i do have to model the floor and mountains then?

if you have a good photograph you can of course camera project the "real" background to stand in geometry..
that gives high realism and very low render times

huh. that would be a quite longer thing to write..
but there is a bunch of tutuorials about that on the net..
you can as well check out www.cgchallenge.com and see the current challenge called outpost.
camera projection is used in all of them afaik.
see the threads from the better ones (higher score). i think there is some links in those as well.

cam projection is something really cool, easy, fast and good looking when applicable.
i got to learn about the idea from eric chauvin (he did stuff like that for a lot of film projects including start wars, contact and so on..).
in the beginning i only way like: hä? you wanna fly through that picture you took with your camera??
but then it was really the coolest thing since digital watches :)
cheers
