hi everybody, this is my first " animation " showreel.
i could call it also a " generalist" showreel beause i worked on different parts of the 3d/2d process, depending of the project. i've mentionned downside the stuff i did for each project.
i hope you like it, and any critic or comment is more than welcome.

thank you guys for all your comments, but reading them, seems like if everything is perfect in my showreel. and i know that it is'nt. so i wish to have some ( more critical comments ) about what you like, what you dislike, or what i should change or add... i think it would be more constructive like this. and it will also help me to do things better next time.

thank you again

It's all really good. It's hard to find anything to be critical about.

Hey Saad,

-The veil on the belly dancer's mouth is a bit weird, it doesn't look like a veil at the first glance; and her hair could use some animation, since you've already animated the clothes.
-I would like to hear the voices of the talking characters, you could've dimmed the music and cranked up the voice over.
- The animation of the squirrel getting dizzy when the nut falls on his head could be exaggerated more, you could've made him swing outside the frame and then come back in.

You have a great reel there, i would love to see more of your work.. great job

thank you ajouz for your comment. i agree with all your critics.

just about the belly dancer : it was a work in progress that i never finished. so unfortunatly i didn't go so far in details of the animation and cloth simulation and even in shading and rendering. but all what you said about it is true.

thank you again :)

Hey Saad,

I think this is a strong reel. I would however have the actual vocal soundtrack for the lipsynching in there as its very difficult to judge without it.
There seems a nice breadth of styles and I think its quite punchy.

thank you for your comments.
i did not put the sound track for the lypsincing because i just don't like the voices that were used on it. so i prefere it like that, with only the music.
oh i forgot to mention the music in the reel : it's spanish fantasy from chick corea.

Nice reel saad,

I agree with ahmed about his comments. However, there is many things I didn't notice tell he mentions it ...

my comment will go for the character with black hair on the third shot, I felt there is something wrong on his hands while watching it again and again ... so I watch it frame by frame ^_^, and I found that his hands go wrong in many places and doesn't act normal ...

the reel looks so strong -masha allah- ... and I liked all of your characters specially the flat dude ... looks awesome :)

If you have some time I would ask you to explain some points :
1- toon shaders, are they from maya or through an editting app ???
2- could you explain a bit the techniques behind the paper-drawing-style characters ??
3- If you still have the time to reach to this point ^_^ could you explain too how did you do the turnning pages and charcters on the book style ??

thanks a lot at least for reading all of my reply :D

cheers,

-Yusuf

thank you all for your comments and critics.
so maxspider3000, i'm happy to answer to your questions :
1- i used the maya toon shader . but i used other passes with it in the compositing like the ambient occlusion, and sometimes fog and zDepth for environnement. the final result is always done after a long tweaking in compositing.
2- for the paper-drawing characters, it's, i will say, 99% done with paint fx on maya.
i created characters with some basic shape first, like primitive objects then i sculpted them
with maya artisan, then i made them paintable and i simply painted over the geometries with different brushes of paint effect and i made the geometries unvisible or full withe so it hides the back side of the paint fx.
then i composed it with a paper texture on after fx
3- for the turning pages : each page is binded to 2 sets of joints, one at the top and one at the bottom. then i FK animated them turning from one side to the other. then, in the hypergraph, i connected the animCurve of the joints to an extraAttribute that i created on a quick selection handle. so all the animation of the page was controlled with this extra atribute from 0 to 1 .
for the rest, it's basic keyframe animation ( scale rotation and translate ) with some bend deformers.
