View Full Version : displacement map real time

Hi all, I'm new in Maya and I try to do something with displacement map. I read in some reviews that with "heightField" node I can see in real time my displacement map influence on my object, but I don't know how to use it. Have someone the patience to explain me how to connect it to my object and how to use the displacement map?
Also some tutorial links are good. Thanks in advise

Height filed is currently a plane so you can preview your disp on a plane.
Create a plane, height field, disp map, shader etc.
Make height field same size as your plane.
Attach disp map to shader attached to plane and to displacement attr of height field.
You can change the quality by changing resolution attr on height field.
You can also scale the effects by changing height scale attr.

Thank you very much, but if I've got a sphere or an organic model can I use the heightField on its?

No the highfield uses only its own geometry, when you make a heighfield node it creats a plane.
Basiclly all the hieght field is good for is previewing your displacement map.
check out highend3d.com
there is a script called interactive displacement, maybe that's what you are looking for
