This past January, I was asked to collaborate in the making of a "machinema" video. When I read the original script, I suggested changes to give the story more believeability. So my partner had me write Scene One.

My change to the script meant we had to shoot a typical suburban home by moonlight. The cost of that would have been significant, and since this was a fan production, we had to keep it light. So I solved the problem with two evenings building everything we need in Maya. I threw together a ranch house model, dropped in trees with them swaying in the breeze, adjusted a light to simulate moonlight, and did a slow dolly shot with the animation camera.

I determined what needed to be shot live and what needed to be CG and we set up a shoot of the actress for the scene, after I rigged and tested a tracking dolly shot by cable & pullies. A Sony HVR-V1U rode the in-studio tram for 25 second of the live-action shot, completing a tracking shot that matches the animation camera at the start of the film.

I created sound effects for the opening 1:30 scene (after the op credits) and a musical underscore, too. My work continues up to the moment the gal gets sucked into the TV. Then my partner's work continues.

The 20-minute episode is available here:

Would love to hear comments on the integration of live action with CG.
