View Full Version : Craglum Lizard
jbradford 05-07-2003, 08:00 AM Hey All - here is a new character I just completed. I call him the Craglum Lizard, don't ask me where that name came from, I just though it sounded cool for a lizard character :curious:
He is 2722 tris, with a 1024 texture map. Software used was 3D Studio MAX 5, Deep paint3d, and photoshop.
Here is four shots, a wire, and the texture map;

nice model and swweeet texture =)
what aspects of the texture did u do with deeppaint3d? i've tried it out but havnt really found much use for it tho i hear its an amazing program
Excellent work James. Great use of your texture page and texel consistency. If were to send you back to your desk before approval, it would be only to shade it a little more. He's flat. Place your imaginary light over the character and shade appropriately. In this regard, my eye was drawn to you arm definition, where it appears you used a darken brush to make the seperations. I'd rather see those 'lines' as less obvious 'guidelines' where the majority of the visual seperation and muscular definition is represented with the shading if the muscles themselves. Nothing will beat seeing a wonderful gradiation from light to dark to really make that muscle 'bulge'.
The easiest and least destructive way is to create either a new layer in DP, or just start fresh with a new map on the character, and create ONLY a greyscale lighting map. This will be the lighting layer you can merge in with the map you have now in photoshop. The texture when viewed by itself ( not on the model ) should feel 3D. Don't go overboard, just work around the model, and even for a quick and dirty pass, make sure every surface facing away from the imaginary light is darker and every surface facing the light is, well, lighter. :thumbsup:
Beyond that, this is a character I would really enjoy animating simply for the way he looks. Character modelers like you really make my job more fun.
Shade this bad boy and start you next character immediately! :bounce:
Cheers
Nice work !!
I got one crit though, the texture looks a bit blurry. maby u should sharpen it up a bit - depending how close u gonna see the model.. other than that Great !! :applause:

Excellent work! You'll get my five star vote :)
Maybe the nails of the foot would be more interesting when they would have another color (maybe black)?

That is great. Excellent modelling and texturing skills. I agree with Marcel about the claws on the foot, being a different color will make it more interesting. I suggest a dark brownish/greenish rather than black though to stick with the color scheme.
Great job!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
money_bags42: I used Deep paint 3d on this model to make the placement of where all the different scales would go, and to get down all the shading values like in the arms and legs.
BlackZ: Thanks
CgMonkey: Thank you
Marcel: I agree, in the actual concept sketch he had black nails, lol. I will be changing that. I'll pose the sketch below too. Thanks for the heads up.
Dete: I'll take a look at that, I could probly shapen it up in some areas.
EvoG: Thanks for the crit! I agree with you on this, I was looking at the arm after reading what you said and will be going back and trying that out. I have a dendency to make muscles way too defined on my drawings so it seems to transfer over to 3d work. Thanks again.
Kalel06: Thank you :)
Here is the original concept:

Great work, James, excellent texturing. =):buttrock:
need to know how do you have done this textures, you simply put a texture above the draw and get started to work or draw this texture point by point? well, it seems a newb question, thats coz im newb! ;)

Thanks again for the positive feedback;
bugo: i usually start with a base texture layer and begin painting on top of that, tweaking it out over and over until it looks good to me. once i think the texture looks right i begin altering the colors and adding light+shade.
