View Full Version : geforce 8800GS slower than radeon 9800pro ?
gregkilla 03-15-2008, 05:37 PM Hello, I've just bought a pc [quad 6600, 4gb, evga geforce 8800GS 384mb] with vista 64 onboard. I was very surprised and got quite angry when I opened my latest scene in 3ds max 2008 [quite big - 2-3 millions of polys] -> the viewport speed was sth like twice slower than the same scene on my previous pc - amd x2 4200, 2gb, radeon 9800 pro!
What is the problem ?? - I tried to use various drivers but it didn't help [in fact some drivers wouldn't install at all, among them - the drivers from the evga's page...]
Please, if anyone knows why is my new gfx card slower than the old one - let me know.

I would if I could - there's an error during installation - sth about not finding proper drivers for my card :D. Of course I downloaded the ones exactly for my system/machine.
Then, are you sure its a Geforce 8800GS? :)

Many people are reporting that viewport speed under vista is a lot slower than XP, viewports on my new dual quad with GF8800GTS on Vista Ultimate64 are no faster than my old dual core with GF7600GT in WinXP.
I really hope that a new Nvidia driver or Vista patch sorts this out....
Cheers,
Si.
GREGKLILLA - what version of Windows was your old machine running? What OS is your new machine?
If the new machine is Vista and the old one XP, then I would say that is your problem. Vista is absolutely slower than XP - luckily my new laptop has XP, unfortuntaly my quad-core desktop is saddled with Vista. REALLY hoping that Vista SP1 does something about it - but I doubt it.
Honestly I wouldn't expect too much of a speed up in 3D apps like Max or Maya. But A slow down shouldn't be happening.
