Name: Arathusa Ki
Race: Driad (Birch Variant)
Class: Clericon
Artifact Weapon: Enchanted Vessels (holy waters)

There was a smell of something old. Older than you and I both together, older than this soil. It came from the source, it came from the yesterday and it was angry. It pulsates, it quickens beneath my feet and I am afraid. We've messed up, we've gone too far.

"You've soiled me. My precious, precious sanctum, ravaged, filthy! Awakened with the taste of hundreds upon hundreds life blood, I cannot stand this any longer. Pulled through my roots, the life of all I nutured, thrown away in this triffle-this fight for dominance. Why must you worry mother? Why do I always have to clean up your messes? This violence, this destruction which has uprooted me has worn me brittle. I shall show you how you have errored. I will clense this place of your stench, your killing, your hatred, your greed. This must stop and this must stop NOW!

Drop down souls. Lower your eyes, close your mouths while mother clenses this world of your stains."

I ask for you to forgive me for I haven't posted my full concept sketches yet. I needed to get this up before it was too late into the event. I've been clearing away as much as I can to make time so I will post all I have later today. Here is something of a placeholder of my progress. More to come later today.

Bring me the tired, I hope to bring restorative help to the fallen, and drown the opposition! Lets kick their asses CGS!

Oh crap I have lost so much time doing commissions. I'd stopped everything to work full time on this from here on out. I am really sorry about my tardiness in respnonses as well, I really do appreciate the support even though I've not followed up as I should.

Never fear! I have just a few things so far. I plan on uploading the vessel details soon as they are very very fun for me. I'm refrencing lots of Roman ornamentation. I'm all over the place as she will have a Koi familiar lol! I need to update myself on your threads as well!

I removed some sketches from up above to add in this post. =) Everything is still here.

Kick some butt people :scream:

"Have you chosen?" She tilted her head and asked, not a hint of emotion crossing her features. She'd managed to make her way down to the forest floor without him noticing. There wasn't much noise, only a smell of wilderness, and of a spice he couldn't recognize.

Her movements were firm, yet lithe as if she measured and calculated each step, each blink. He was in her home now. He managed to drag himself here with one remaining leg, it now going numb, shaking from the incresed burden. She watched him carefully, noticing with resolve how he'd mask the pain he was in.

She drew from her back two iron bowls of some sort, plain looking and worn on the outside. Placing them in front, she explained her process of his repair, and allowed him to decide...

Further Explaination:
Fox: If the warrior, invoker, etc seeks agility, cunning and survivalism tactics during his/her cleansing (healing), than he/she may choose this vessel. Hightened senses are attributes of this vessel during healing/sanctification.

Stag: For pure strength, endurance and dominance. Once cleansed (healed/sanctified) body will have these additional attibutes. Loss of agility may occur.

Process consists of several options based on condition of those being healed. Drinking. When ingestion not safe, bathing or a washing of the brow, inner palms and fingertips.

Thanks again. ^^; I've added a more final decision for her face. QUick and questionable prportions but the idea is down at least. Not too clear right now but I want to do something with branches. Horns are awfully popular it seems.

She's nature and I want to convey that as best as possible. Added a random doodle from the sketchbook of her vessel and possible companion. Possible. Too much going on to tell so far.

Those are some great drawings so far, Kelley! I love the design of the head (I especially liked the forehead in the 2nd post, the side view one.) I also really like the designs of the vessels. Now you just have to pull it all together into the 3 pages... Good luck!

Hi Kelly

I see amazing stuff in your portfolio and also here in this post. The design of nature-organic

Head elements are really good. I like it. The whole character brings me feeling of Celtic myths.
I wish you success!

Well, right now I'm just using my own webspace for it. Plenty of room to host there there, however, its just the same to upload them to photobucket, and place the links from it here.

Hope that helps. And thanks

The maidens would come everyday. They were identical. Their only difference were the vessels they carried, each holding their own symbol. Each time of their visit, they'd kneel, taking water from Arathusa's lake. Often times, they would rest beneath the birch tree, sharing stories, their sadness and their dislike of service to the land's ruler.

Arathusa listened carefully, years old, but still concidered a child of the world. Her form yet to step from its roots. She embraced them with her branches, shielded the maidens from heat and allowed them to drink from her lake.

She heard stories of their plots, their dislike of servitude to this ruler. They were planning to rid themselves of him. In what way, she did not know, but knew somehow, she would be involved.

One day, as appreciation, one of the maidens carried water to the lake and knelt to give back into it. Arathusa was pleased, but caught sight of something else, a spirit originally not of her own land, poured into the water. A fish! He stood still at first, slight shock from being gently poured from the vessel into what would be his new home. The maidens had no need to return with their former ruler's artifacts, for he could have all the water he so pleased, in a form that would never allow him to leave.

The maidens left their vessels, and their ruler with Arathusa that day at her lake. She listened for several years of a former ruler, once human, reduced to the confines of his precious lake. Still, Arathusa would not be released from her roots for some time to come, and grew and understanding as she heard his trials and what would lead him to his bitter state.

Short Version: Two maidens carried fresh water to their king from a lake. He was very picky and needed only water from this particular lake. Tired of his cruel ways, they ploted and turned their king into a Choguro Purachina (pure white) koi, and left him in his lake to stay with as much water as he wanted, forever. The maidens left his vessels and him to the lake forever, allowing Arathusa and the Koi to gradually grow a bond as she was yet to move from her tree, herself.

This is excellent. Given the nature of DW this time around a lot of people are going the route of a Nature's protector character, but this is one of if not the most original ideas in the vein. The idea of the bowls is especially creative. Upon first reading about your thoughts of doing a companion/familiar character I thought you might be stretching yourself thin. But the concept you've come up for him is like something out of Grimm Brothers. Very nice stuff!

What programs are you prefer working with?

Gatlingg
03-26-2008, 11:27 PM
Miqosis: I agree about the almost thin spreading. Its why I'm still not sure if he will be included. My rough draft of my final illustration easily permits him, but you know how these things turn out. I need the concept to be practical and not as if I said "Yay I want her to have this, and this and oh! *cherrypick* this too. :scream:

As far as programs, I've always been a total Painter user. I started off in Photoshop and have kept myself updated with practical usage of it. I still use it for my sketches sometimes. MOstly Painter. Just got 10 after using 8 for a couple of years and I love it.

Thanks for stopping by and your kindness. =)

Im ready for my full concepts now. I will post a couple of things before my two concept sheets and then my rough idea of the final image later today. I did my last minute references the other day during a break. I needed the fresh air.

Always nice to go for walks and understand your surroundings. Its very refreshing. Touch things, smell things and bring back something if you can. The birch family trees peel so I have some smooth twigs and bark on my desk. :) Some say its a bit much, but I have to be there while I'm drawing, if you get what I mean. I got sidetracked and counted turtles in a lake behind these trees. They're like a mini armored fleet. :3 They don't move out of the way either haha "meh, go around, goosums"

Last preliminary sketch I'll post, Ill have a full character sketch finally soon after...

Trying to keep my spirits up as my personal life is sucking and causing my drive to wane. Gotta just try and see what happens. Sorry I've no more uploads than this, they're coming I promise. I'm starting on my final and I already have enough thumbs to put together something for that area. Gotta scan the rest of my heads and 3 pose and thats it I think.

Sorry stuff isn't going so well.
These latest sketches are nice. The second one has the more dynamic pose, but I think it could possibly be a stronger shot of you pulled her left hand and arm back (i.e. screen-right) so that it isn't interfering with the head and silhouettes better. If you're not planning on using that pose for your final... no worries then!

Good luck with everything!

Gatlingg

Thanks Walrus. And that one will indeed be my final or one close to the idea. Your advice is good. I shall try to do something with her arm.

Hello again, I think in personal that painting is more important than any other life stuff, but hope all will be fine with you in the future.

So I like the figure but may be you will try some different angle, or pose for better visualization. Express the spiritual atmosphere oh the character-just advice, nothing more.

Looking to see final image

Keep painting and all best form me!

Yes Boykinov you nailed it. I got some fresh air yesterday.

I am indeed trying something different that I will be posting for feedback today. :) I probably will do more with this character later on after the competition so its good t have these extra sketches around for inspiration in any case.

Thanks everyone. I'm making my rounds through you alls threads today for updates too.

Me, double post... sorry.

04-02-2008, 06:56 PM
After some needed rest and meditation my head is clear. Your feedback, especially yours, Boykinov help me realize I lost track of what I was trying to convey. I lost the magic of her and her environment. So...

I'm bringing it back to soil and finding a sanctum to escape to like the wounded might during this conflict. Some place hidden away to take time for rest and recovery. A place I would like to go actually. But enough cheese and personal things, I am having to make up for lost time now, but I know I can make it. Here is my direction in rough sketch.

Some slight changes but nothing steps away from the driad concept in general. I'm cleaning up my 3 poses now and should have everything closing in. The rendering process seems to go a lot faster now for some reason so I won't concern myself too much about it.

Oh, and thanks Soggy, its where most of my inspiration comes from so I am happy you feel that way.

My second choice isn't as dynamic as the first, but I feel it conveys what I feel much better than it ever did. So, I'm moving forward. Center compositions are tough because it generally weakens the central image and makes things boring so I hope to fix this come time to add additional elements like foliage. This clean version is very busy and some things don't stick out, but my coloring process should help as I go. Ill be posting a few as I paint. I don't think I've posted one of my processes before.

First is the clear drawing. I then add a base with a quick big airbrush for mood, lighting direction and any other nuances. I paint on a single layer on top of my sketch, the underlying color is on the background. So, almost every time I work its:

bg color > sketch > paint

Eventually the paint layer will cover completely the bottom two layers.

Hi Kelley,

I like the design of your imagination in paper a lot! the magic its there for sure! That’s difficult to see sometimes with so many styles ...this don't happen to you! Congratulation on that good taste, as for your character I simply love her! :scream: Also the composition read very beatifull, and her history behind looks there 2! My only concern for now will be the look of her a bit close, and it will be interesting to see just a glance of her "soul", maybe not directly to the camera or viewer but to the greatness of nature witch she represents. And I also liked the flipped post before; don’t know if you are going to leave that side?
Really Gorgeous work and looking forward to more updates !:)

oh man that hand on the first post is awesome! just turn that in as a hand monster and youll win! im so i love with it haha teach me how to paint!

your final comp is lookin nice, but the only thing im worried about is the lights behind the tree are brighter then anything on your character and takes the focus off of her.

Hanging in there. I've been unintentionally reclusive again. Thanks for all of the crits and comments everyone. I am not ignoring I swear. Im sure my direction has its drawbacks in her design I think is over my head and a lot to take in without a true close shot of her. But I love her though, for myself at least. If I could paint my personality; firm, hidden, but a kind and nurturing respect for all things... then I guess it would be her. Haha sap. Not an end to this work, but just about. I bite my tail on this tomorrow or day after.

If the quality of these are shoddy, its because these are not optimized images. Only captured. Optimized on final post. Don't need to have your comps dragging ass now eh?http://krhart.com/DWIII/Ary_step4.jpg

Hello Kelley

I really like how you character rise after each post.

Why don’t you try to put some green tones in the background to make a difference between character and environment?

For me you work is my favorite one

Hi Kelley,
She's looking radiant in that water and wood environment, I agree about the suggestion of adding green for the bg , and also the fishes are looking same skin tone as her is it to represent an extension out if her power? or to unify better the color palette, anyways I am loving every step of this wip, very much magical as you pointed to desiring for her!
