if its an editable poly press "backspace". if its an editable mesh just make it invisable

Just so it's said, doing either of what pencil_head suggests will hide the edge. A perfectly valid approch, so I'm not bashing the response, I just wanted to point it out in case Nimue has desires to have the edge literally deleted.

I believe that in Poly edit mode the delete key will dissolve the edge, which seems to be what you want. :)

Sorry, but no, the delete key removes the faces that depends on the edge, just as it does in Edit Mesh mode.

Strange,in Max R3.1 I know it for sure does delete the face especially in Editable Mesh but I just tried it in Gmax's Editable Poly and nope,it dissolves it without affecting any of the polygon. :p
I guess that just depends on either you're in editable mesh or poly...

thanksfor help, im trying to delete that line without deleting the face. i want both those sides of the line to be one face, not to. im working with edit mesh on this one.

Also how do i go aboout making the line invisible?

Get into edges sub-object selection and select your edge(s) then scroll down at the bottom of the modify panel at the 'surface properties' and click invisible.
Actually I'd delete it and stitch the rest together if you do not need the top or bottom vertice.

ok if i delete the top vertice. it would get ride of the top and bottom face, how would i put those back together?

if its an editible poly you can just select the line, hit backspace like was mentioned above, but you are still left with the vertices.
Then you can simply do the same thing in vertex mode to get rid of those vertexes from the line and there will be no trace of the line.
tah-da!! poly rules. down with the mesh!

In MAX5, if you have an EPoly, select an edge, and hit delete, it takes the surrounding faces with it.
If you hit backspace it effectivly hides the edge, which may be enough for some.
I'm not sure what you mean by dissolve, but it sounds like it's hiding the edge. I guess gMAX has the backspace/delete thing implemented differently.

Just a note: In max 5 you have a "remove" feature that will remove the edge without affecting any polys.

pressing the remove button is actually the same as pressing backspace.. it removes the edge but keeps it's connecting polys/vertices

OK, this is getting messy. Here it is in a nutshell:
In Editable Poly, in Max 4 and GMax, hitting the delete key with an edge selected will remove the edge without destroying its adjoining faces. The edge is not hidden, it is actually removed from the object's edge list.
In Editable Poly, in Max 5, hitting the backspace key with an edge selected will remove the edge without destroying its adjoining faces. The edge is not hidden, it is actually removed from the object's edge list. This is the same as hitting the delete key in Max 4/GMax.
In Editable Poly, in Max 5, hitting the delete key with an edge selected will delete the edge along with its adjointing faces.
In Editable Mesh, in any Max version, there is no ability to remove an edge while maintaining the surrounding faces. You can set the edge invisible, which is visually similar to removing an edge in Editable Poly, but the edge is maintained in the object database and can still be selected/operated on.
When converting from Editable Mesh to Editable Poly, hidden edges are simply removed and do not become part of the EPoly edge data. When converting from Editable Poly to Editable Mesh all faces are triangulated, but edges are selectively hidden such that only the original EPoly edges remain visible. Conversion in either direction is essentially non-destructive.
Hopefully, this summarizes and clarifies what we're all trying to get across in this discussion:)

from my experiences, using backspace does not hide it, but remove it, thus affecting the geometry. (assuming you remove both the edge and vertices)

customize > customize user interface > colors tab > load
there are a few custom color schemes that ship with max.
