Rockhoppermedia 03-14-2008, 11:09 PM Hi Im in, looking forward to the world of steam or concrete cancer where a fungus has infected and eats concrete and the worlds attempt to neutralise it and the damage it causes. Not mushroom for ideas but I am a fungy to get on with LOL
Wait for prelim sketches, still have not decided which plates to use

concept and doodle stage,
http://pic70.picturetrail.com/VOL1800/9894759/17882961/308712047.jpg
I am thinking of a stringy invasive fungus that eats concrete, lots of scaffolding and fungicide spray. Would be nice to have the original video file, so i create frame safe areas. But hey this is a challenge. Got to design this so shadow interactions can be composited.

Any suggestions on how to do the fungus would be appreciated. I was thinking of it holding parts of the building aloft like a octopus.

I tried to cook a octupuss once, there are really tricky to cook, kept reaching out to turn off the gas!:applause:

these are about a foot long and form clusters, they are a fungus that came of a returning space craft. They are flammable as they contain large quantitys of methane. They eat concrete and if they hit a electrical connection they explode quite violently. This is a single spore. When old they go hard as plastic and tend to form connections between feeding sites.
What a strange imagination I have.
Rich
love the idea and the single spore-sketch :D the color of the fungus in the other sketches irritates me, kinda bubble-gummy >.< the way it holds the building together works really really well, can't wait to see it all fleshed out a bit more

I am alive I have had a few problems with the matte design. I will however crack on and get a decent concept rather than the scribble I had done. I keep telling myself that the shot is only for a few seconds so hold back on detail. Which is quite hard for me. I also want to do a camera pan. I was thinking a news crew type something happens mid pan. But hey keep it simple.
Enjoyed ashes to ashes by the way.

Work so far, need help with the fungus it keeps ending up looking like bubble gum or if I stay true to life it looks like overgrown ivy.
Any ideas please let me know. The other two mattes have the same problem,
Cheers

Hey Richard,
First thing I would do is decide what kind of fungus you want. If you want a wet fungus it will have lots of stronge highlights and will reflect most of the color all around the scene. And look up some references , lots of them. If your going for a moss you can probably get the best effect with custom brushes made from photo reference. After deciding the texture your going for, then I think you should decide on how it will be holding up parts of the building. Will it look like slop or maybe a spider web?
Its hard to say what you should do. But what I said above is probably what I would do. I hope that helps :D
Cheers

Cheers, Matt I have experimented with a the emboss and contour tool, If i keep it subtle it might work. Infact i will post up wip asap,
Cheers for the inspiration.

Hey not a problem, I was scratching my head on wether to have a link to the next building, yes you have sold it to me. Thanks for taking the time out to do that much appreciated. I might put more infected buildings in the background too.
Cheers Matt

See above dont worry about the bubble gum colour its just to help me construct a texture over. I cant wait to get to work to try firing spores as a element. :banghead:
Cheers guys nice to see all competition entrants showing all there WIP, just proves that we are all team players :applause:

Cool stuff! I think I like the thicker stocks and stringy attatchments like the first one and the droopiness rather than the stiffness in the second piece. Something like War of the Worlds and to a lesser extent, Super Mario Bros. ;) I did this for fun since drawing fungus on a building couldnt be passed up. Without getting too much into spiderweb things, keep some strands tight and some droopy, maybe have them "interact" I guess.

Rockhopper. Some awesome concepts so far I am really looking forward to the finished matte. Remmmber to paint paint and sometimes re-paint. Paint until your wrist hurts. And then paint some more.
