Ok you are thinking in Maya terms!

There is no Hypershade in XSI, where you have a unified shader graph of the entire scene. Materials in XSI are always shaders attached to something. They can't exist without being attached. When you do a Get > Material, you are attaching a material to an object.

However, your case is not hopeless. You can apply materials not only on geometric objects, but also on groups, layers and partitions. As soon as you make an object member of the group (simply by drag-n-drop in the Explorer, for example), the member inherits the group material. Remove the object from the group will restore the object's material on the object.

An important concept here is hierarchy. In XSI this is how the software works. Everything has a level of precedence. So you can put properties and overrides on the entity that has more precedence, and everything below it will inherit those. This order is (from the less important to more important):
-object
-branch
-group
-layer
-partition

Although you can't see everything in the scene at one, playing with this concept will allow you to achieve what you are currently looking for.
