Hi All,

I have been using 3ds max for almost 3 years, and have gotten quite a firm grasp on almost every aspect of the program. I almost know it like the back of my hand, and love it, but...

For reasons beyond my control, I will be needing to get familiar with using Maya over the next few months.

I'm looking forward to being able to add Maya to my arsenal, but needless to say, I dont want all my 3ds max experience to go to waste... so I was wondering if there are any Tutorials, Books, or anything else that can help me apply my knowledge of 3ds max towards learning Maya.

Kinda like a manual that'll tell me what Maya's equivilent to Max's (insert feature here) is.

Or if there are any people here that have made the transition from Max to Maya, please share your experiences and anything that helped you make the tradition.

Any help you can offer is very appreciated,

I've used max for the past 3 years too, and have been working in Maya for around 5 months now. I found Maya really easy to dive right into, and as long as you have a good basic knowledgeof CG then you should too, besides with the abundance of tutorials on the net and the help docs that ship with it, you cant really go wrong....

but needless to say, I dont want all my 3ds max experience to go to waste...

nooo, how could experience go to waste? and because you're learning a new piece of software doesn't mean you can't still use good ole max:love:

try the PDF stunndman refers to ,It gives you a basic translation of a good deal of mayas features if I remember correctly,

Thanks for the link guys, It sure will help me out!

CJcuervo: Dont worry, I wont be leaving MAX anytime soon!.

Now, are there any books for Maya that can get me up and started, which are based on the fact that I'm new to MAYA, but not 3D programs in general?

Or should I just go with that PDF book that comes with Maya PLE?

the main problem, I guess, is the fact that Maya has other "tips and tricks" It would be nice if one experienced Maya user get disposed to write a document together with a Max user to create a real good transition pdf. The 3dsmax> Maya from Alias Wavefront is a very very little piece

FIrst of all, take a fly over the modelling tools. There is much, which is similar to Max, but has other names.

If thereŽs a menu-point you donŽt know, point it with your mouse (in the main menu bar, not hotbox) and youŽll see in the help line, what needs to be selected and in which order.

Helped me very much

hey

i'm using max and maya at the moment, what i did was change all my shortcuts to suit my workflow.

i made a world of difference, and still does

o and because i'm left handed, all my max keys are focused on the right side of the KB

eg. material editor = M and in maya M = hypershade
move= , rotate= . scale= /

get the idea,

but there is a lot of things that you must customize in Maya, and you must go deep.. I still couldn't find a simple edge chamfer, couldn't find the vertex/ edge snap for poly cut, couldn't cut many polygons like Max does, and many more.. would be nice if exist some document like... "in Max to do that you..... and in Maya you can reach it by...."

CgMonkey:hummn.. good..

I would like to know if anybody experienced in Maya, want to write with me a pdf with focus on tips and tricks , and
"how to do this" , I can make the max part, and somebody can make the "Maya" part, later i'll try to find someone to help on XSI..
guess many people on cg community would like to read something like that, it would help to 'break the wall' between the different 3d softwares learning ;)
