View Full Version : Point Modeling Help
Emberghost 05-06-2003, 11:52 PM Hello I have decided to point model a head rather than box model it. Point modeling seems to make things alot more precise but it is alot more time consuming. This is my head so far, I would appreciate some crits about it. I will be posting my progress through here as well...thx

Looks like you have a lot of work to do still.. at this point is kind of looks like a phantom of the opera mask.. you really need to work on the details around the eye and where's the nostril?
whoa dude, I would learn the basic things you need to do to create an eye and a nose and a mouth etc. before you go any further with this.
its kinda shapeless.

This is where I am at now, I hope it looks better than my last pic. Does everything look right as well as in the right spots....

That's a nice improvement over the first pic. Looks like the proportions are basically correct. Nostril's still MIA. :)

Umm the only abreviation I know of for MIA is missing in action, and I am guessing this is not the abreviation that you are using lol.

you're doing well, but it looks like you have many many many points there, a really high mesh. you may find it easier to try to point model with as few points as possible, this will allow you to build up a much smoother mesh.
check out this excellent thread in the modelling area on topology, this should give you a good ide,a and you can see how few polys most people use on their heads (the less you use, the smoother the result and the easier to tweak and get exactly how you want).

How do I render a pic as a wireframe? Do I just have to take a screenshot of c4d and do it that way?
In the render settings in 'effects' you should switch on 'cel render' (on the right) and check the 'edge' option...

Thanks Kirl, My face has 154 poly's..... I have just realised by looking at other peoples mesh'es that my polys should move and be placed in certain ways. All I did when creating the points was make sure they were in the right spot and had the somewhat correct depth to it. I guess I will start over and make a new head with all this new knowledge in mind. Thanks everybody for all your help.
hmm thats not a tremendous ammount of polys its just that they are misplaced.
the majority of your polys should be around the eyes nose and mouth. the other areas, like the forehead can be done with say 6-7 polys at the most.
general rule, if your not going to add a crease don't use more than 1-2 polys for the area

okay these areas need some serious poly reduction.
try and get most polys around the areas that need the most detail like the eyes and mouth.

Have you done drawings off of which these correspond or photos? You should have reference for the major ordinal positions or at the least side view and front.
Take a look at successful models and study how the polys are laid out. I am just a newbie at all of this, but I'm a professional artist who often has to make 3D turnarounds for sculptors who are sculpting our characters for the first time. It is important to know the structure and how it works from all the different sides.
What does your model look like from the side at this point? Are you viewing it from front, side and perspective when you model?
Good luck with your modeling.

I used a front and side photo for my references, I didnt put polys where I should have and I am going to start my face all over, thanks for your ideas though. BTW I view it from side and front so I get depth correct...
