Is there a way to shut off a material on an object so it doesnt render. Im trying to cut down my render times and I cant just remove the texture. So Id like to just switch it off.

Thanks.

depends do you want Grey shading or solid color no shading?

If its the prior , then no not without a plugin, if its the latte then yes add a compositing tag and set it to matte object.

Get the plug in "mask texture" developed by our wonderful French comrades.
This will remove all texture from renders.

If you want to be specific, just add a palin white texture and place it to the right
of your assigned texture. When you want hte real texture to render ..... slide it over
to the right of the white one.

If you want the entire object not to render .... click the button.

Those look great so far. I have a material that has PSD text and an alpha channel on it. Im using it with mograph so its making billions of copies of the material. I wish I could just go and delete the material (or put that big X through it) until i want to render it full res. I thought I remember hearing there was a way to just X out a material. But maybe Im mistaken.

Lots of ways around this.

If it's not important how the material is mapped (UV vs flat vs cubic vs whatev) then control-drag one of the clones's texture tag onto the parent object and right click on it and choose 'select identical children tags.' Then control click the tag on the parent to deselect it (you still want the tag on the parent), then hit delete. Your tag will only be on the parent.

Or if you want to have the X'd out tag, do all of the above but don't delete. Rather go to the Attributes manager for the texture tag, and in the Tag tab click on the right triangle, the one to the right of the link field, and hit 'Clear.' You'll have x'd out texture tags aplenty. Uh, can't remember if your parent material then overrides the x-outs, but that's easy to test in your scene.
