View Full Version : Need help from Maya texture experts
DennisTheArtist 03-13-2008, 05:24 PM I am afraid to post my work but I figured that I should take my medicine no matter what if I want to get better at this. Here Is a Car I modeled in Maya. I want to make the metal more realistic looking by adding some good reflections. I will post what kind of look I would like to achieve similar results to. Does anyone here know how to make realistic metals in Maya? Also I want a more realistic looking glass window for my car. Where should I start?

Study some Mental Ray, learn to use use Car paint Shader and a Mia_material Glass preset ( for example ).
Add a bit of good lighting ( image based lighting such as an HDRI from Paul Debevec (http://www.debevec.org/Probes/)'s site would do for a start ) and you should be set.
Oh...and post on the Lighting and Shaders section of this forum ;)

Thanks, but I was wondering if you have advice more specific to the use of Maya & the different attribute editor. I thought HDRI rendering was for 3d max only. Does Maya have a similar plug-in software like 3d max's Brazil? Is Maya's Mental ray renderer good enough to do the job? Where can I find the Car paint shader feature in Maya? I don't understand why this question should be listed under shaders & lighting & not textures. Where is Mia_material glass located under what roll-out?

No need for plug ins, Mental Ray is fully integrated into Maya.
Meanwhile, look at the image you've provided as example. Where exactly, besides the Ferrari logo on the tire, do you see a texture applied onto the model?
What makes that image stand out is the shading and lighting work.

Okay, I gotcha. Well, I guess what I was refering to was the way some 3D software allows for sub-surface layering/scattering on materials such as the outside of the car in order to acheive a more realistic look to them. For example, the human skin or something or a glossy finish over a paint used on a car. That's why I posted under textures to learn how to do something like that in Maya. I seems that there are a bunch of things going on on the texture of the example car, but maybe I'm wrong for thinking that. Like different layers or something, I'm not exactly sure, but I don't think that materials come like that right out the box with out some knowlege & some tweaking. I tried the car shader Mia, it helps things a bit, but just a little. How do I layer my materials for the exterior of the car if that's what's needed? I can't seem to find a default Mia glass shader anywhere, do you know where that is? I'm using Maya2008, I don't know if that helps you or not, but I don't see it in there anywhere. Did you mean something else? I will post under lighting & shading as you suggested just to be on the safe side though. Thanks.
