I'm in need of some help regading creating a scene where my 3d dino opens its mouth - thats easy but... then dripping and clinging to the teeth I want gooey saliva. - Any idea how I could do this - using combustion and max. Thanks for your help - be quick uni deadline is nearing!

I have a solution!
Better subject title!

As much as I would like to follow this thread, I'm not going to hunt it down to check its progress. It is now lost in obscurity.

Please Read Before Posting (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57917)

Seen this asked before. I Believe the answer was to model the larger strands that hang as separate meshes, skinned with the head. Then use a flex modifer to give the strands some spring (or dangle). Breaking strands would be more difficult. I can't think of an easy way to do tearing, save maybe to do a switch. Strech it with your skinning until it's thin, then swap out visibility with two meshes for the broken strand. Let them both fall with SimCloth (or other dynamics) anchoring at the mouth. Drips you could do with a Super Spray and some metaparticles.

Thanks nimajneb helpful, I thought I might get some ripping effects with simcloth? I'll play some more thanks!

magicm: Stroker posted a link 'Please Read Before Posting' which suggests that those asking stupid q's r max bums - illegally using the app.

Il don't think that Simcloth will do actual tearing, but look into it. I'm pretty sure it would be good for dyamics of the torn strands after. I think the switch is your best bet, unless someone else has some ideas.

Well, what I've decided to do is animate a 2d paint layer (dripping saliva) and using the alpha I will place it on a plane inside the mouth. As for the stretching parts, they'll be 2d strands on separate planes which I will animate closing inwards so they look thinner as the mouth opens further.

Why composite? Do you already have clean footage of the drip?

My suggestion is to do it in 3D using dense lofts, soft selections and FFD's (and the switch nimajneb mentioned). This way the lighting will match and some shadows play may enhance realism.

If you zine is a bit heavy do a multipass, but unless you have film quality footage I predict trouble in compositing.

Look forward to seeing your results.

BTW - I have seen a cloth simulator that supports tears but those brain cells must have been covered in bong resin, because I can't recall where...

Just so it's said, the guys that did that series Dinosaurs, or Walking With Dinosaurs, or whatever it was called, had to have saliva as well. We're talking some fairly sophisticated stuff they were doing, and still they used closeups of real-life models they'd built with real-life goo dripping down for all their saliva shots.

I'm sure it can be done, I've seen some rather nice examples even, using the dynamics-system in Maya, but I'm guessing it won't neccessairly be easy to get a realistic effect going...

I was thinking maybe, maybe, Realflow (http://www.nextlimit.com) could be of use? It does support tearing at least..
