Well, I decided it was time for me to join in on the fun. So I dusted of this old relic I've had lying around for quite a while. TIme to finish this. A fight to the death ;)

My old robot!

http://pchan.cgworks.com/max/robot2.jpg

http://pchan.cgworks.com/max/handleg.jpg

And a turntable, 1,25Mb divx 4.12 (http://pchan.vi2.com/max/deleteme2.avi)

The stomach is missing, and the feet look awful, so that will be remedied first of all. Then it's on to texturing :)

More to come!

*edit: changed server for the pics

Ahem, nice model, what are you going to do with it? (Lightning, scene, etc.)

TEXTURES TEXTURES.

Materials already looks good, but I think some little metal scrath in joins, or somethink would make it even better. It's to clean here, and the main idea of this challenge is texturing

Hejsan Urgaffel. Det model ar mycket cool :D
But man, you have a lot of work ahead of you, and a model like this had loads of potential for REALLY kick ass texturing too!! :D:D
In my opinion, he's a bit too reflective....
If he was mine to texture, I'd make him old and rusted and worn and scratched :p But that's cos I love dirty old things...

This is an Awesome robot!!!!!!!!! Only 1 thing but that's personall... i don't like the head that goes with it :)

Iguiniz.X.
04-18-2002, 08:22 PM
Yea maybe the head is a bit undetailed in comprehantion with the rest of the body. But I really like the BOT.
So are you going to make the middle body or are you leaving him like this and in what enviroment are you puting him int?

Well great going.:wavey: :bounce:

Nice to see that you're finally doing something with your old robot ;)
Well... as i have probably said before, it looks excellent!

Good lök!

I'm not gonna ask what he's resting his hand on.... :D

04-19-2002, 03:32 AM
Small update. I think I'll just go for wires for the stomach. Constructing a true axis didn't work last time so... Screw it :) Wires are cool

http://pchan.vi2.com/max/robo3.jpg

Detail of the head. I'll redo it some, dunno how much yet.

http://pchan.vi2.com/max/headshot.jpg

That leaves the feet and ankles...

Now for replies:

I have no idea what kind of setting I'll whip up for this d00d, we'll see what I can come up with. Hopefully something that won't take ages to finish ;)

Dr Jones and Leigh: I haven't even started yet. Have to finish modeling first. He's brand new, just out of the factory, hence the relfections ;) I'll dirty him up some and do a before/after pic.

Error, Iquiniz, the head will be dealt with. I just have to figure out in which way. Lots of free-form modeling going on... Not too much sketching lol.

Grayson: It's a... er... an... ah... Kaos knows ;)

*edit: Leigh, your sig is scary. All that's missing are a couple of lensflares. ;)

Large pic of the back of the robot! (http://pchan.vi2.com/max/lildragon.jpg)

*/edit

*edit 2: changed the hed pic. Dunno what to do with the head at the moment, so I'll focus on the feet instead. Any suggestions are welcome :)

I worked on the head and this is what became of it:

Evil robot approaching :)

I'll post a turntable later... In 10 minutes unless my computer fails me.

*edit: Oh yeah, the textures will probably be banged up later :) For now it's shiny new that's the name of the game. I'll add scratches and dents when I start the serious texturing.

*edit 2:

Turntable of the head, 263Kb, divX 4.12 (http://pchan.vi2.com/max/deleteme3.avi)

Hey Urgaffel,
why did you have to go and pinch down his visor, i really liked it better before :(
maybe an arc shape would work better then that V-shape..
And this really is a texturing/lighting/rendering challenge, not a modlling one :p

urgaffel
04-22-2002, 03:44 PM
I've saved the old head, don't worry :)

And I have to finish it before I can texture it, hence me modeling like a maniac to finish it and still have some time to texture :)

Btw, there aren't any procedurals in this yet, just a bunch of falloff maps in the visor area to get the cool glowy effect. More to come later... I have to find out a good way to do the feet and add some more bolts all over the damn thing. They look good but are a pain to implement... :annoyed:

I'll see if I can get something done tonight

Leigh: Umm... one comment, you should try increasing the subdivision amount on your model - it's looking a wee bit blocky

The blockiness is there because of the complete and utter lack of meshsmooth :) It's not finished yet, so I'm not smoothing it. It'll recieve some more modeling goodness and then I'll ms it and then I'll post it again. I just wanted to show y'all I'm alive and working on this bastard.

About emails, I'm sorry babe, I'm just really slow on replying! *kicks self* I'll try to speed it up. I Promise

Hasch: ...why does it shine through?? i men, why can i look

Because they are jointed :) It'll all be clear when it's done...

The server I hosted the first pics and avis on seems to be down, I copied the images to another one so it should all be fine for now.

F*ckarseshitpiss... I've talked to the "wonderful" company that were supposed to deliver my wacom... When I ordered it, it said on their site that they were recieving a shipment the same day (wednesday). When I phone and talk to them monday, they say "no, we don't have that in stock at the moment..." ARGH... Idiots...

Anyway. I think I'll use this as an environment for the robot:

3.1Mb divx avi (http://www.pchan.vi2.com/max/chair004_1.avi)

1.1Mb divx avi (http://www.pchan.vi2.com/max/chair004_2.avi)

Same avi, just different quality/size :)

I'll see if I can find a few pics somewhere, I'll edit this post when I do.

Texturing will come... Finished the foot now, I'm just adding the last few bolts to the legs, then it's on to unwrapping (the boring part of the challenge) :)

Thought of it during a bad day at work. Imagine being held by that large hand and then getting pierced by that.

your textures are going grate and grate.

congratulations.

i think if inside the cracks you make the borders white or light you could have a great result.
the oxid of hte cracks have a ot of intensity variation of light to dark.

I normally texture ,affter rining and last lighting.

You texture the last? why you do it?

can you explain your method please.

Anyway, I've tweaked it some more... This will be the last render of the arm. Next render will be of the whole upper body (I hope)

here's the texture sheet...

Gilgamesh
05-08-2002, 03:01 AM
looks good. Although, I would expect the scored part to be less specular than you have it. You know the tears. They are really shiny.
Also, just an idea: you could raise the "DANGER" decal up a little in the bump map to make it actually look like it is a sticker that had been stuck on. And alter it's specularity slightly from the metal surrounding it. And, there you have it.

Putois_Blagueur
05-09-2002, 11:30 AM
I loved your first model.....
you've gone in a very different way, applying old and scratched textures. It's a good idea but you don't seem to know how scratches are made.:p
Of course, i say that but i would be unable to to such a thing. When you look around in reality, you see that scratches are made on the parts of an object that are in relief. I mean that the painting of an object is damaged where there are a lot of frictions. But on your model, the painting is damaged in the grooves.:thumbsdow But your main scratch is very good:thumbsup: You should damage the painting on the top of each model. Look at this picture below....

Your robot is really perfect !

urgaffel
05-09-2002, 09:22 PM
Thanks for the suggestions! I'm almost done unwrapping the upper body, will start texturing it asap. I might actually be able to finish this one...

As for the grooves, it's a different material underneath, that's why it's darker. It's not damaged.

Back later with an update (I hope)

Looking really nice! I agree with some of the others though, a slightly different spec on the under metal will distigush it from the top metal. Plus when you think about it, it should be a bit rougher- I mean thats where something dug into it right ?

Just a little ibt more spec breakup and maybe a hint of a grunge map to add a bit more complexity would be cool too :)

Finally got the time to comment your challenge and I must say that it's coming along very nicely!

This seems to be one of those scenes which can be made almost entirely by lighting if needed, because the model is so detailed. Of course textures never hurt, but diffuse, bump and specular maps should be enough if you're using very stong keylight (volumetric if possible, 'cause dust particles in the air casting long shadows would look awesome haha) from above and hiding as many places as possible in shadow. Showing something and leaving something out are both as important things. Hmm, am I making myself clear.. I do an overpaint so you can see clearly what I mean....

http://www.mbnet.fi/~badgers/robo_light.jpg

ok, done! it took a while :) Notice how the mainlight above casts strong shadows below everything and lights the top side, local contrast stays relatively high so it gives a nice definition between the bodyparts. I made the pose look a bit more relaxed and added more weight. There's also some bouncelight reflecting from the floor and changed the camera angle a bit.

btw. If you want to see well done specular map for metal check out www.rustboy.com , you can see the textures on the "making of" section (number 2).
