How can I get a wav file in to C4D to check the sync with the animation? Can I do this with a loud speaker object. It doesn't have to be for final output. Thanks

Add a null (or use an existing object) - right click null in the timeline -
add special track > sound

Browse for your file in the dialogue in the AM.

I'm on 10.111, 10.5 might be a little different... not sure.
