View Full Version : Animating cracking ice surface in Maya
mcbridecasey 03-11-2008, 07:05 PM Does anybody have a creative solution to animate ice cracking apart? (similar to some of the scrat scenes in ice age) I am using maya complete. I have some ideas on how to approach it. (ie. Modeling both sides of the crack as two objects and animate the verticies spreading apart.) Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

Depending from the shot you can do some things like :
*Model two cracked surfaces stick closely together and one solid, you animate visibility of solid so he dissapear at some moment ( you can use ramp as transparency texture ),and reveal two piesces, than animate them moving apart which can go nicely with some white smoke ( particles ) coming from the crack.
*Animated Displacement map can serve well too ( black and white )
**Dont animate vertices, use clusters for such task **

I got that problem solved... I needed the crack to gradually split down the middle so I animated the vertices pullin apart from one side to the other....
