Modelling some parts as flying elements is a lot easier, like these strips of material on top of the pants that hold your belt. connecting them to the pants is troublesome. But is maintaining one element mesh neccesary for game modelling?

No, but it usually makes skinning and bone deformation less of a pain.

It really depends on the engine.
Whilest some engines donīt care about open parts at all, some start to nurgle.
Just try and see if it works.
Stacking/Intersecting geometry definately saves polys.

QFA, some engines zdepth sorting sucks and will create a bunch of flickering while others may not.
