I found a little pdf that explains how the Film Gimp is used at the Rhythm & Hues studio in their production-

This is really old new(1998). The project has been renamed to Cinepaint
www.cinepaint.org

Thanks Beaker for pointing that out. But somehow I had overlooked that little pdf and I thought others that were interested in the Cinepaint project would like to read the case study too.
