I'm very new to Maya, and am having trouble getting any kind of quality render out of the program. I'm not using a second renderering program. None of the renders are smooth like they should be, and the lights aren't creating a smooth gradient, they are more steps in color. Is there some sort of option I have/don't have selected, or any tricks that help to get a better render??

Did You click on the "1:1" - Button in the Render View ?

I have just the opposite problem, my co-worker ask me some day ago, if itīs possible in Maya to lower the quality of the rendered images  & :insane: & :banghead:

You need to increase the anti aliasing quality. Generally you could just set your render quality to production or something. Or adjust it by hand. Take a good look at the render globals and play w/ the diff. settings.

Dichotomy,

I have the same problem as you when I first learn Maya. But if you keep learn to adjust the global render parameters and the specific Mental Ray, the quality of the picture is amazingly gorgeous.

sounds like you run your windows in a 16 bit color mode.. switch to a 24 or 32 bit color mode.. then at least the banding should be gone.
that is nothing that should happen because of poor AA settings

Thanks everyone for the responses, I can't wait to try to render again. Hopefully this time it will work better.
Thanks again

Hitting the 1:1 button zooms the image to 100% its actual size. As soon as you scale the render view window smaller than the rendered image the image gets all messed up. This is a minor anoyance not found in other programs like 3ds Max. I too ran into this problem when starting out.

if you have Maya 4.5 then you can download Mental Ray for free from the A|W website. it has its glitches. but it sure as hell beats maya's default renderer.

Everyone,
Thanks for the feedback. I think I have it figured out. It was the 1:1 ratio that fixed it. I'll keep messing with the global illumination and such, but that fixed most of it.
Thanks
