This is a great start. Considering the title I would much rather see some reflective light from the water. Maybe add a blue light hitting the bottom of the tree to reveal the tree a bit more. I don't know what your plans are but when I think of a spooky tree I think of tree taking the form of something scary for example - making it look like a monster about to pounce on the viewer.

Thanks for the idea some blue from the water would be a good touch especially to get some other colors in the tree area besides brown. I was planning on have a small band of adventurers silhouetted by torch light. The red would be good at popping the jagged "teeth" off the page. I also wanted to put in some vines to break out the linear patterns.

Hey there all. Finished the piece hope you all like it. Crit is still appreciated! AS for adjustments, I crispend up alot of the edges and added the travelers. Also I added some moss and stuff on the rocks to bring them more into the scene and dulled back the roots of the main tree.http://i30.tinypic.com/13z50nr.jpg

damn why didnt i think of this! its a great piece and simple but effective, the people at the bottom really make it work and creat a sense of scale, i would say that all you have to do now is sharpen the edges up and add more depth and shadows.

I think you can boost up the intensity of the fire torches that the people are holding. At least a stronger glow at the center of the torch. additionally, you can emphasize the tree's "teeth" structure at the entrance by adding stronger reflect light from the torches. cheers!
