Woo, that's hot stuff right there.

Nice balance and great details/design. I agree her 'hair' is totally the bomb. Very curious what she would look like fully surfaced, but that presentation is beautiful, and gives it a nice illustration feel. My only real gripe is the way she gets cut off on the very very bottom of the frame.

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback and motivation! I'd glad you guys like it! Makes all the late nights worthwhile! ;) /me hugs Cgtalk

At one point I was thinking that I wasn't going to be able to get this done... this piece is for a uni assignment for one of our theory subjects... we got an assignment and so I decided that it'd be an excuse to do some 3d stuff! (but I only had two and a half weeks to do it, everything from drawing concepts to modeling, lighting, rendering, doh!)

Due to the time limitations, (hehe I can only skip so many lectures before I get in trouble :p), I've only really been modeling the geometry that is visible to the camera / concept sketches. So, I haven't really been able to work on her other side... but I'd definetely like to get back on that! ... at the momment though, the focus was trying to get the still image working and completed! :)

[Personally, I think it's okay to do that, as I've noticed that Stahlberg did something similar for his last image, where he setup some scene elements to only work specifically in the final camera angle to save time, and he's like my hero... so... /me follow in his footsteps ;)]

hehe thnx! :) I did a quick test with the face with just a planar map of a modified photo, and it worked out quite well, but I have little experience with UV mapping atm, and Maya has a few issues with UV maps where when you smooth the mesh, it doesn't smooth the UV's and it causes distortions... (but there's work arounds ;)) I didn't think I'd have enough time to cover it within the time limit, tho! :p But, one day!!

Face test: :D

Heya Maximus, thnx! :D In Maya, you can just draw splines and then turn em into tubes by using 'extrude', or it's easier to just draw the splines and use "create pipe" from the "Goomoo" scripts as it does the extrude for you in a handy interface ;)

That would be very cool if you could make it look like hair was strands of light coming out of those things! It would completely change the balance of the pic, though...:hmm:

Great ideas guys! initially I was thinking of having some gaps/holes in the back of the head, and the machinery bits partially lit from a light that was eminating from the inside of the head through those gaps (clumsy wording :p), and also have long wiring and cabling coming from some of the plugs to look like long hair, but didn't get to explore those due to time.... after I submit the assignment and have more time, I'd like to make an alternative version with those features and alternative lighting/composition, but too many assignments at the momment ;)

excellent attention to details - it really adds to the overall quality. 2.5 weeks is a decent time, too. Is that full out, every waking hour, a typical working day or a few hours here and there? That will make the difference between moving up in the world or hobbyist...

(it would have taken me 2 weeks to design!)

^ All elements coverted to the base polys, except for the nurbs objects and the highlighted objects in the last pic ;)

There's some surfaces that aren't quads, but they didn't seam to cause any anomolies where I wanted it to be smooth :)

Start out with Polygons and then convert to SubDiv for the organic parts like the head and torso :D

Good idea, I haven't been able to get any properly translucent looking shaders in Maya (/me dreams of SSS :d~~~~), but it's something I'd like to look into!

Good idea, I might desaturate the background colour a little... I might give it a tweek before I print it for submission ;)

Using Maya, you can just draw curves and then use extrude or use "create pipe" from the "goomoo" utilities from saving to select the circle and curves and clicking extrude all the time! (See above post for linky)

Thanks guys ;) Thanks for your opinions ;)
About textures... I kinda like it untextured atm, I like the semi-illustrative feel to the image personally, but I'd like to attempt to make an alternative, version with a different scope, a little grittier, and a more realistically-geared version with textures with a different pose, mood and lighting, with a scene in the background, and also get it setup for animation... :bounce:  I'll get back to it when time permits! ;)

Hey, I missed this when it was on the frontpage I think. It's a sweet model! I wish I could get Maya to do this for me, all I'm able to do is make a box...and a bad one at that. :) Ah well, it's cool knowing ther're inspiring folks using tough programs to their fullest. Great work!

mmm the thread got ressurrected! :D So, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you very much for your kind words!

Thank you all for all the encouraging words, it really lifts my spirits when I'm feeling a bit down on my luck... (A big portion of this image was just luck and fluke too, hehe). And when the holidays get here, I'll hopefully be working on something new! :D

Thanks for all the comments, critiques, inspiration and encouragements!
