Title: Street Cop
Name: Mashru Mishu
Country: USA
Software: Maya, Photoshop
This is a character I sculpted a while ago but recently made a realtime version of it with normal maps, color map and specular map. Mudbox was used for sculpting the high poly, topogun and maya for creating the low poly, xnormal for generating normal maps and AO maps and photoshop to texture it. The color maps is hand painted, no photo sources used.
Recently I made a small workflow tutorial at the AREA:

Is it possible to see the highpoly model would really be keen to see it.
thanks all!
the high poly and wireframes are posted in my cgs portfolio but here it is anyways:

Lovely work.
I remember seeing the sculpted version of this guy. Also there's a fat maifa isn't it with a shotgun. Brilliant details.
You were the one who inspired me to download mudbox and get sculpting..I am afraid I think my skills aren't much in human modeling cause I really am not getting ahead with my mouse and mudbox. ;)
But anyways, really good work. Excellent details both on the high and low versions. Mainly the textures are very nice. 5 starts !!

I'm just curious, how much time did it take you, the modeling and texturing all together?
Thanks,

@fernando - i worked on this on and off but if i add up the time it probably took me somewhere between 2-3 weeks for the modeling and another week for the texturing.

I saw this on another forum as well, totally amazing. I really love the elbow area. That really sells it for me for some reason. I MUST say however, that shirt is hurting this guy's image a lot. I mean is he a narcotics officer undercover? Cuz that is a poor disguise if so. If he is not, then why is he wearing the shirt? I could see him smoking weed for sure, but wearing a weed worshipping wardrobe is seriously tacky. Makes him kinda dorky if you ask me. Someone I would make fun of (from a distance). Sorry to be so blunt, but I just feel like the shirt is detracting rather than adding to an otherwise flawless piece.

thanks all for the comments!
@keenerbean - actually this guy is from a place where marijuana is legalized :). but seriously, i made it quite intentionally and its meant to be taken light heartedly since everything else in the character was so serious. may be he is sarcastically provoking the weed dealers who knows lol.

Amazing work but I was wondering if you could elaborate a bit on how ou hand-painted those textures, specifically the jeans. With no Photo Sources at all?!? Aside form painting the lights and darks and faded parts, how did you get the material of the actual jeans to look so good? I know part of this can be done with a subtle pattern in the Normal Map but even the UV Textures you pasted with just the color maps you can see the material for the jeans and it looks great. Just curious how you pulled that off. I'm blown away. Thanks!
rezatayebi
03-14-2008, 07:34 PM
My God
This is a true masterpiece.
@feeesh - for fabrics i have custom patterns that i painted and tiled. i fill a separate layer with that pattern, then use transform-warp to conform that pattern with the UV so that it doesnt look like a straight grid going through the surface. for stitches i have some simple brushes with high spacing made out of the basic round brush. you just need to customize the brush to orient to your stroke direction and adjust the roundness. the quality of patterns and brushes are not as important as its scale. to make them believable you need to get the scaling right. add a bit of randomness here and there because in real-life nothing is a straight line. add color noise/variance because even if you dont see it there can be actually lit bit of every color present in every surface in a real photo. i hope that makes some sense if not ask again. :)

Greeetings, very great work. You have very nice poly flow on your low res mesh and your high res mesh in MudBox is wonderful. I love the small details of the viens in his arm and the cigarette pack in his pocket.
I just wanted to ask a couple questions about your work flow process. I know you start with modeling the low res mesh in Maya. Then you unwrap the UV's to move it over to MudBox. But here in lie the questions. Do you detail it first in MudBox to make the normal map and then match the texture map up to the details of the normal map? Or do paint the texture map first and then match the details of the high res mesh to texture map? Your normal map and texture map match up so well I just had to ask.
Also of note, you have a texture map where the face is dark blusish on your web site. If this the specular map?
Thank you if answer my questions.
hey Alan, here is how it went:
1. make a clean base mesh for sculpting, this mesh has no UV its only for sculpting.
2. sculpting in mudbox
3. retopo low poly mesh in topogun
4. clean/fix and UV low mesh in maya
5. bake normal map and AO map in xnormal
6. texture in photoshop
the normal map and the AO map works as roadmap for the color map.
yes, that dark blueish is the specular map.
tiekmir
03-18-2008, 04:36 PM
Thank you for the reply. That is an interesting workflow. I have some research to do now. Again, my thanks.
One more question though, what is an AO map?
you are welcome :)
AO = Ambient Occlusion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_occlusion
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ambient+occlusion&btnG=Google+Search
tiekmir
03-18-2008, 08:57 PM
Oh, okay. Thanks. I know what ambient occlusion is, but the abbreviation threw me off. Game Developers Magazine had a very good article on ambient occlusion for shadowy characters recently. I have used it for environmental models, but have yet to implement it for characters models.
Thanks again. Your work is very inspiring.

Hi man,
Very impressive.........
Something that I really want to learn is how to put a convincing skin vein like what you did in your model, is it a bump, displacement or sculpted mesh?
Well done
the veins on this is from a normal map based on high poly sculpt. but its nothing special. can be done with a simple soft brush stroke and convert into normal map.
for anyone interested, i recently did a workflow tutorial for this character over at AREA site:

05-29-2008, 12:35 AM
Hey Mashru,
I saw the workflow of your model and I am very intrigued with the quality of your model and textures. Also, nice idea of using the green channel of the normal map to add further detail to the diffuse. I have nothing to crit at all... do you have any rendered closeups of his face...? He looks like someone I would not want to **** with...
san_tiago
05-30-2008, 03:34 PM
Hi Mashru, great work!!!
I have one questions about you workflow: When you sculpt high poly details in mudbox, you do that in separatedly pieces?
If is so, when you retopo lowpoly mesh in maya you attach all pieces in one ( I realized it from the unwrap map), so my question is: how do you apply the normal maps, that were separated sculped, in a final lowpoly character wich is a single mesh?
Thanks so much.
Santiago.
i bake normal map in xNormal, in it you can have multiple high poly obj files. it does not really matter though, when you export multiple objects from mudbox its one obj file.
Trancos057
05-30-2008, 06:35 PM
Perfect work , i like it very much!
san_tiago
05-30-2008, 07:10 PM
Do you export to Mudbox, sculpt and then export one obj file (with all pieces attached) to retopologize and unwrap in Maya?
Thanks!!!
as i mentioned in the workflow tutorial I export a semi-high level mesh from Mudbox to retopo on top of it. most of the time i will export as one object, but sometimes if i have overlapping parts that needs separate low poly then i will do them separately. for example i make the gun holster separately. i am using Topogun to retopo. after retopo i bring all the low poly to maya to make the final low poly and unwrap it and then i bake the normal maps.
may be this image will make it clear for you:

I'm no expert, but for me this is one of the best human models i've seen in this forum so far. I love everything about it, the bulge in his back pocket, the ripped jeans at the bottom.
Great! 5*'s.

Thanks
