View Full Version : My first venture into the bones realm...

I decided to bone my first model ever...! No, wait... That didn't come out right... :hmm:

I decided to 'rig' my first model ever. Wich was conviniently a hand, but naturally problems arose quickly. Below are some pics, pretty much explaining what's the problem.

The first is without bones and the second is when I put them in. I tried 0-ing all the movement and rotation values of the model but that doesn't seem to work...

This is when I put in the bones... :annoyed:

well, i just started to delve into the bones problems too, so probably sb will explain it better.
try to follow those steps and it should be ok :

first create your bones hierachy outside of your mesh (ie, not as a child of the mesh), then check that the bones are in "off" state (ie, not with the green check mark).
then drop your bones hierarchy as a child of your hand mesh, and right click on the top most bone in your bones hierarchy and "fix bones" (it will ask if u should include sub-objects, say "yes")

i guess it should be ok.

Thanks, that fixed it. I knew it must've been something simple like that, but now for the ineviteble next question...

When I try to move a finger the bone structure comes out of the hand and ony takes a small piece of the geometry with it. Example below...

I already set the bone's min and max value very close together at the start, to work from there. In the manual they make it seem so straight forward...

u have to define the bone's influence on the mesh. the best and simpliest way i know is to us Claude Bonnet to paint the bone's influences on the mesh. do u have it ?

check that ALL bones have restriction tags, even if u have bones that dont do anything.

Cool, thanks! :xtreme:

That did it, I just used restriction tags on every bone and unchecked the limit radius.

Makes me wonder what the actual use of the min and max radius really is...

Is Claude bonnet a plug-in? (free?)

And how can I best go about limmiting the rotation radius? I suppose with IK tags, but any handy tricks to determine the rotation values?

Hey, it's only my first try at a pose, I guess I should move the vertex weights on the thumb a little...

nice no claude bonnet is not free its part of mocca so if you dont have that you are up a tree.

nice hand man thats pretty nice.

bones are such tricky devils constantely give me fits, or used to anyway.

Thanks, yeah, I'm quite surprised it worked out so well myself... :)

Now I'll try to fully rig a character. I expect to be pulling some hairs out over that one...

For this hand only I had a massive string of restriction tags already, I'm seriously wondering how that'll work out on a full character... :hmm:
