Hi David,
I like your sketches !
I like the longer hair in the pencil drawing beter then the short hair in the colored one. Like Samson it might give him more strength or when he blows his hair goes up or something.

Cool concept… especially like the sound weapon (horns correct?) Although the tuning fork guy reads a mile away for as silhouette, the horn version is just… really interesting. Perhaps turn him more of a ¾ angle so that we can see the mouthpiece connect to the larger horn? Great start on this one.

thanks guys.
He will get long hair ;)
Started on the orthos. Just wondering do they mean by 'one color' a color overlay or 1 hue but variation in Saturation?... hmm..

haha. Nice sketches. Fascinating concept. Strong silhouette. You could add some more tatoos? The orthose could be either black and white or monocromatic (one of any color you choose). I don't they mind for the orthose but I would ask to be on the safe side.

Very nice! Love the silhouette sketch of the magnet guy too.
And if you look at the example (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/submissions/index.php) sheets they give in the guidelines theyre all the same hue...
DavidSmit
03-12-2008, 09:36 AM
Thanks guys! :)
RaresHalmagean: might add more tatoos's. First have to finish the general shapes and patterns on the wood. Then i'll see if tatoo's are needed to guide the eye more. Will try it though! thanks :)
Soggyclog: Exact, the same hue, but the modelsheet above is also the same hue, just variation in saturation.. Might mail them or remove the saturation at all. Bit to risky otherwise :)

man this concept rocks,
at first glance I interpreted those as coconut launchers.. but then I saw he has a mouthpiece as well, which then makes them look like horns. Hes got a really cool form and I agree with the longer dreads hair.

Thanks for the head's up guys!
here's the front view ortho. Still need to do the glowing-carvings in the wood, but will do that later, first have to make a seperate design for that.
Let me know what you think!

This is terrific, David! REally original idea and a fun character, and a bizarre Artifact. I like the detructed robot-head hanging from the waist and the back. I like the version with the CGTalk warpaint on teh chest, and especially like that it looks hand-painted, not a perfect representation of the logo.
I'm not sure I like the pale untanned chest and upper arms: It makes sense if he normally wears a shirt, but he's not wearing one now. I mean, after all, he's running around topless with this weapon now, and just doing that he'd pick up a bit of a tan. And he looks perfectly comfortable running around without shirt and shoes, so he just doesn;t seem like the kind of guy who would be that pale.
Second concern: I'm not crazy about the turqoise glow runes on the horns. I'm not bothered by them on the value tests, so maybe it's just the turquoise I'm not sold on. Maybe another color would look better. (Or maybe you're perfectly happy with the turquoise, which would be fine, too! :) )
Anyhow, nice work, and hope you don't mind my little crits. But overall, great work. Keep going with it!

Thanks a lot for the positive replys guys!
Walrus: Great comments! Thanks!!
Point 1, the tan: True, very true even. I made the choice of him being this light because I was afraid of the readability of the character and forms. And to keep a contrast with the darker horns. Maybe I overdid it a tad. Will try out a darker version and see if it works!
Point 2, the turquoise: I agree, I wanted a cool color to have a strong contrast with the warm body. Will tryout some other tints aswel.
I'll take these points with me thanks!
ScudzAlmighty: Haha, air, he blows air and a LOT of it. The final image will make that clear (hopefully). The air will create a shockwave which will shatter and break the robots. :)

Wow, love your technique! The painting effect gives it a really fresh feel, which complements the originality of your design.
About the tan, I thought it was some sort of body paint and I think it makes it interesting. I vote keep it, (I do agree about the turqoise though).
Love it, cant wait to see the final pose!

Here's an update. Started on the patterns. Quite busy but I think he can have it. Might tone them down a notch though.

I like the whole concept and the character.
But honestly I can't see that working in a game.
Although that won't matter much, I think...

Getting better everytime I take a look ...
Are you also gone add some motion from the horns like wind or steam like streaks or someting anything that shows he's blowing or like he did just blow ?

why wouldn't it work in a game? because its an original concept? I don't understand that comment.
This is a beautiful concept. I love the patterns you put together. can't wait to see this finished!!

Great work David! Youre piece is coming along very nicely. Two things to consider; He needs a little more contrast between his cloths and skin, and his chest looks unusually saggy. Try a quick darken of the clothes or skin to bolden the contrast so as to not look as similar in value as it is. I don't know if it's the nipples or the general shape of the breats but the chest looks a little bit strange. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if there was someone with such an unusual chest . Keep up the great work!

And really original. Keep it up.

DavidSmit: I thought that such a heavy and probably slow character would be hard to implement gameplay wise. At least as a main character. But first of all it doesn't have to be a main character and it depends on the game itself.
On a second thought it even looks like a RTS-unit. But I'm babbling about things that are not even existing and out of context.
So I stop that and wish you good luck with your submission. :D

Thanks for the replys guys!
RaresHalmagean: good point about the colors of the cloths. Will look into it! thanks. And the chest, yeah, it's weird but thats op purpose :) should be a bit off. May change it a bit still though!
RoGreg: Hehe it's good to have gameplay in mind I guess! Thanks for explaining your point!
Here's the first sketch for the final illustration. Going to need a lot of work still!

Wow David! This is Fantastic, :applause: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)So much good things the artefact 1sth looks so fun the design and the concept of the power really great! I like all what this character tell so far as for design and color, it reveals in himself a good history!:D (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#) That’s a hard thing to do! Totally like that! The companions in the color shoot look great, I only think that whatever he is about to blow should look a bit more meaningful or perhaps its just because it their 1sth steps hehe!

Hi David,
Wow this is becoming one of the best 2D's out there !
The background also looks very cool !
Only bring back the blow effect I liked it, and maybe a bit more streaky effect instead of a dust like effect, an idea is that maybe the dust bounces up of the ground by the blow of the horns, it kind of looks like your going that way already or not ?
Also, I thought this guy was big but it looks like in the background (on the left) he has an even bigger cousin, lol
Very original character David. I really love the design.
The final looks like a fun image. And excellent painting style.
