View Full Version : Animation : Mercedes-Benz commercial
Mr.Sanders 05-06-2003, 09:39 AM A fictional commercial of the Mercedes model 2003 SL55 AMG.
IMO the nicest one they got :)
Weapon of choice is maya 4.5 and the software rendrer (wish I had GI, HDRI, or anything other cool besides bad raytracing).
I'm currently looking for work, so hopefully this would be an nice addition to my reel.

No one had any comments besides the guy sitting 10 feet behind me?
Wonder if that's a good thing, or a bad thing :hmm:

I'm modeling the same car (not the AMG version tho) so i can say you've done a really great work! The modeling is precise (nurbs? subds?) the animation's nice, the lighting is good, the shading could be better.

Yepp, I agree on the shader part. Need to work on that part.
The modeling is actually box modeling with "some" time spent on tweaking the surfaces to be "perfectly" shaped and highlighted (hence no tri's, due to the maya renedrer producing some artifacts in the highlight's of smoothed tri's).
I though about using nurbs, but the maya renderer creates some nasty edges on cut's etc. when rendered.:annoyed:
Really great modelling. I know the pain of getting a decent car paint shader in Mayas standard renderer. Maybe you shouln't have worked with specular highlights but only with reflected white cards. Also pixhos hdri fake ain't that bad.
And nurbs aren't that bad, you just need to tesselate them like hell to make those seams disappear.
I like it. :applause:

Colt, is the fake hdri method the same as used in GI-Joe?
Will defently check out the edge solution on nurbs. Thnx for the comment and tips

looks really nice! the only thing i saw that i didnt like was the driver side front tire at the end of the video. the tread seemed way to bumpy and rounded. anyone else see it?
btw, what was the rendertime on this?

Yeah, check www.pixho.com There's a tutorial about it, but I think it's already implemented in the latest Gi-Joe. (I mean the HDRI like reflections, not the illumination)

The modeling is great but I have to agree that the materials could use some work.

colt, yepp I've tried the GI_Joe method, but could'nt get a result I was satisfied with.. probably because of the reflection maps I used. Also tried with witheboards, but ended up with a straight forward reflection map :hmm: .. Gonna make som stills later with a better rendrer, and compostion with a real picture.. maybe I'll have more success then :)

nice work man
very cool
a few suggestion, if u gonna work on this more, try to make a better rear light texture, give the lights more depth to it, so ppl can c the lens is actually there, instead of texture
and one more thing, the part between the door and the car body, doesnt look as smooth as other part of the car, i look at it for few times, and it bother me with the rest of the car, u might consider fixing that part too.
again, good job, love that benz, and definitely the best car they have so far:thumbsup:

nek11man, the lights are actually modeled down to the very last bit :hmm: . Mighht be that I've only smothed one of thoose parts once and not twice as the rest. My bad in that case :)
