Take your pick!:D
I use the the shockwave 3d exporter that integrates with Macromedia Director 8.5+.
I guess it depends on what you're using it for. Is it for stand-alone application, or web-based?

i had like a comparison of the different options/products, goal is to present detailed navigable environments from cd/dvd.

We're talking data-CD/DVDs right?, not.. uh.. DVDs that are playable directly from a DVD player or something.

For desktopcomputers I'd actually suggest something like Flash, or just plain HTML. Something like 90% of all desktopcomputers has Flash installed, and it's completly cross-platform. And as a bonus, is not superly hard to make stuff with.

If you venture into Director or some other crap you tend to loose out on the Mac crowd (I think.. come to think of it I never did do a lot of research into that.. maybe today even Director files are cross-platform without having to buy like a completly seperate Mac license?). Anyway, or there'll be people unable or unwilling to run .exe files and such.

You won't get proper realtime 3d "gameengine" technology up and running in Flash though, so if that's a critical part of it Director or some other mini-programmer-environment sounds like will be needed.

what about RTRE from cubicspace.com
or Virtools? G-max, plasma?

Indeed i meant cd-rom and DVD-rom. the RT render engine has to have the capacity to handle detailed meshes with detailed textures. lighting would be baked in.

mac compatibilty is not really an issue.
However for director there used to be a workaround to make cross platform cd's: you had to create once a standard startup directormovie for both platforms which always linked to the real movie which you give always the same name. Copy paste and you could produce for both platforms because all other files are shared.

Again I can't provide you with suggestions on render-engines as such, I hope someone else can help you directly with what you ask. I'll again go the route of suggesting something that might do the job for you, just doing so differently than you may want. I'm thinking about the various 3d-plugins for misc. browsers, for instance Viewpoint (http://www.viewpoint.com) makes one. Here's (http://www.ghostopsmod.com/images/viewpoint/deagle.html) an example for what it's worth.

There are others as well, specifically I believe there is (or was) a danish one around that offers more in the ways of scripting behaviour and such.

Coupled together with HTML and Flash and that might be able to create what you're looking for.

Just thoughts really, I hope others can provide you with a direct answer to your question.
