I'm playing with the hair plug-in and exploring ways of colouring the hair. A simple material applied to the hair surface appears to be just a projection. This means a long strand of hair can exhibit different colours along its whole length depending on how the hair is laid. Preferably, I'd like a hair strand to maintain its colour from root to tip and take its colour from the point from which the hair exits the surface object. Does that make sense? I presume this is a feature to be implemented?

OK, I've worked out a system to get streaking, by combining two hair effects and applying mutually-exclusive UV maps to determine placement by Hairs/cm.

Have you tried using Custom ST Coordinates on your texture map node of the hair surface? That will make the hair retain it's colour from start to tip and colour it based on the first UV channel of the object.

Great tip! That gives infinitely greater control of the hair colour. I'll try that on something a little more compilcated, like a shaggy haired cat.

NikkiC2,

I must confess that I’m slightly confused with your original post, the shading possibilities in Messiah are extensive. I would suggest looking at and exploring the ‘gradient’ node. In respect to maintaining the colour along the length, have a look at the ‘hair shader’ it self. Some quick examples on a single fibre

Hi,

I was making a fundamental error in the way a texture map is applied to hair. I can't repeat the error exactly, but the first image below shows the mistake. The texture is simply a projection on to the hair. The second corrects that mistake using "custom ST coordinates".

great stuff!
@NikkiC2 - I like the cartoony-ness of your mistake as much as the corrected version!
