laughed like mad when I saw this. I mean when was the last time anyone said they needed to copy from C4D.

of course from the SIK comments I can tell he probibly does not have all that much experience with it.

Have you seen this?

http://www.trinitymediainc.com/Tutorials/html/subpatch_weights.html

I did this tut in LW and thought, "Man, what a bunch of hoops to jump through compared to C4D!"

[edit]- Well, I see the link to the Maxon modelling .mov on that page isn't working. For those who don't know it was a video showing the tools being used on the electrical plug in the HyperNURBS 2 tutorial that comes with R8. Including the holes being made with Extrude Inner and the Bridge tool.

*WARNING* Over enthusiastic newbie posts ahead...

The thing that LW tutorial doesn't show is the steps needed to apply the weight map. Something I found a little awkward... but then, I'm not a LW wiz. It may not be so bad once you get used to it.

And BTW... I like some things about LW. I'd still like to be familiar with. Heck... I want to learn them all!:airguitar

I went and figured out how to do that same thing with C4D last night. Sorry if this seems like overly simple stuff... call me crazy, obnoxious, whatever..... but I'm having fun here.:bounce:

1. Make a box, make it editable, select the Live Selection tool and UNCHECK the "Only Select Visible Elements" box in the Active Tool Manager. Leave it unchecked for all steps.
2. Select Polygon Tool and click once on the center front surface of the box, front and back will be selected.

3. Press 'I' for Extrude Inner, click and drag to make a smaller polygon. With inner polys still selected, press the delete key. Tap the spacebar to drop the Extrude Tool.
http://home.attbi.com/~moorerf/box02.jpg

4. Rotate box (3 key + click and drag), select Point Tool, with Live selection tool drag across all inner points. Select Scale Tool (T key) and drag red handle to reduce width of inner openning.

cont......

5. Press 'B' for Bridge Tool, Rotate box and connect point pairs front to back, be sure to bridge first set of points a second time to close the last inside polygon. This goes quick by using the 3 key + click and drag to rotate the box to get to the inside corners of the inner openning.
http://home.attbi.com/~moorerf/box04.jpg

6. Tap the spacebar to drop the the Bridge tool, rotate the box to look at it from an edge corner, select Polygon Tool and drag a selection through the length of the box.
http://home.attbi.com/~moorerf/box05.jpg

7. Rotate back to front of box, hold down the Ctrl key and drag around the inside area to deselect front and back surface polys. This will leave only the outer edge polys selected.
http://home.attbi.com/~moorerf/box06.jpg

8. Drop the box in a HyperNURBS, press the period key, click and drag.
http://home.attbi.com/~moorerf/box07.jpg

I'm really loving that Live Selection Tool!:buttrock:

Question... Is there a faster way of doing this?

Haven't really read all of it, but instead deleting the middle poly's and bridging every single point you can just bridge the two poly's... :)

NEWTEK and their pre-user friendly, pond scum coloured interface must die, MAXON reign supreme, lol :)

no flame war please, I'm joking.... or am I
 :banghead:

Awesome! Makes it even faster... didn't even think of trying to bridge polys. Thanks, Kirl!

Jeesh.... what a dope:hmm:

Connecting polygons with the bridge tool is how it's shown in the elctrical plug tutorial. I've done that thing a couple times. I did another tut that showed points being connected with it and that's all I remembered.

I need to focus.... I'm bouncing all over the place here.

I'm teaching myself this program. What would some of you experienced guys suggest as an order of study? I mean... "Don't worry about THAT until you know THIS," kind of advice. How did you go about learning this program?

Anything you can suggest to make the best use of time in practicing would be appreciated.

umm I am not the best by a long way but one thing that is important is to. Read the whole friggen manual. the whole thing plus if you have additional modules read their manuals too.

if you only have R8 see if you can get a copy of the R7 manual its still very relavant.

I have a pretty good idea of what pretty much all the modeling and animation tools do. But my method was just to dink around a bit everyday.

also if you want to do human heads you are absolutly gonna need a book on human anatomy.

I just futz around with cinema everyday, also do all the tutorials you can till your eyes fall out, and try to complete them. Some guy from pixar said 90 percent of applicants can get their projects 90 percent finished, but its the ten percent who go the extra mile and finish that get hired.

or something like that but thatwas the general idea of the post.

hope this helps.

of course might I add that I am in the 90 percent who never completly finish group.

The only Lw thing i'd like to have is the modeler, about the rest... C4D wins hands down imho.

RTWFM - Got it...:banghead:

I've been using the manual more as a reference along with doing tutorials. If I came across something in a tut that I didn't know, I'd look it up.

I'll start on my first real bites of that elephant today.:insane:

Intimidated??? hardly:rolleyes:

try this with pyrocluster
ftp://ftp.newtek.com/pub/LightWave/VideoClips/HVcomet.mpg

or this with C4D "Dynamics"

Btw you can easily do both with Pyrocluster and SoftIK, if you don't know how to do them it's not a C4D problem :shame:

Well I wouldnt say that the animation job would be easy.
but possible yes of course the original animation would be difficult in any app.
animations not an easy thing, even if you are ultra talented.

which i am not.

Really....Soft IK??
rig and weight bones and hand animate motion like this???

http://www.dstorm.co.jp/DS_Plug/md2/movie/c4b.mpg

if C4D's SIK and MOCCA "easily" could create animations like this
then why all the collective salivating over "motionbuilder "and the FBX vaporware C4D plugin

just curious:shrug:

Now have "MASH" put that skirt on a walking female character
and have it react to her legs moving underneath:cool:

after looking at that C4D SIK "Cloth" example
and My Lightwave Motion designer Clip,
I can see why you
"intimidators" would want to end this thread:p

NO flames just facts:airguitar

I already said this is a rather stupid thread, i don't wanna intimidate anything or anyone, i'd simply like to keep using this forum and C4D without anyone coming here saying "hey try doing this with C4D". You asked how to reproduce those simple 2 examples and i already told you how. If you prefer using Lw keep using it instead of losing your and our time in stupid comparisons

HA! I misread this thread title as "IMITATE" and ignored it. It was more interesting than I realised. What a d*ck! I hate being lysdexcisic...

And what a nice, relaxed, unstressed and friendly lot these LW'ers are, aren't they?
