View Full Version : "Daphne's new broom" short film finished!
alesmav 03-09-2008, 12:16 AM Heya!
Like I promised, my short is finally done! You can check it out at my website
http://www.alesmav.com/DaphnesNewBroom/
You can view the high or the low res quicktime version. I disabled the streaming so you'll have to wait until the whole thing downloads, since I'd like you to see it in one piece (without the annoying streaming pauses). I will also make Youtube upload tommorow.
A little bit about the project:
I did the animation part of this short at Animationmentor.com. It took me 9 months (taking class 6 twice) part time to finish the animation. Before that I took one term off to model the character and sets. For the rigging I used Setup machine 2 - I don't think I would make it without this awesome plugin. After finishing animation at the end of december 2007, I started working on cloth simulation, lighting, rendering and compositing, which took another 2 months. The sound studio session took about a week with 3 hour session with a voice talent. So it took me about a year (part time - I also have a job) to finish this short from scratch.
Hope you enjoy the film! Let me know if you have any trouble with download.

Bahahah!! That was incredible! One of the best AM shorts I've seen--not to mention, when compared to non-AM shorts, one of the best shorts period!
Wonderful characters, environments, gags, rendering--and most importantly, animation!
You've done a great job!

Stunning work Ales, an extraordinarily well done short. There really wasn't any part of it that wasn't top notch. Will be front page here in no time!

That was very good.
The only thing that stuck out for me. There was a shot when the witch had gotten control of the broom, the one where she realizes that she had control for the time being. It just shows the top half of her body in the frame. That really stuck out, because we can't see the broom, which is the whole point of this story, right?
I would just pull the camera back so that we can see the broom while she's riding on it.
Other than that, very good job.

Awesome! I love the detailed facial features of "Daphne" and I love the frog at the beginning and the end.

Excellent!
Very good use of cartoon physics. Animation is top notch. I can't see a single thing that seems to move in a wrong way.
Perhaps her head could have some more polys in the close up shots, because her cheeks an ears sometimes look a little edgy. And in the last shot, where Daphne closes the door, her hand first seems to grip the air to close the door(there is no door handle) and then penetrates the door for a short time.

hey, this is indeed good animation, not superb but its solid, same goes for most of the artwork, so since you guys at AM and learning specifically animation, ya did your job well enough. and now i really dont want to spoil your day, just give a honest crit in case ya wanna improve.
on the storytelling and dramatic aspects, there can be a lot of improvement yet made ;)
besides the hole plot being clear right away ( actually already from the title ), the comedic turning points in the microstructure didnt really have much of an impact ( read, wasnt really funny, rather try hard ). also theres elements that dont contribute to the story at all, like the frog being hit by the door, but are rather an effect. if ya wanna improve in this part of the field, id suggest getting some material on dramaturgy and storytelling, theres some really good resource out there. would be too much too give you a troughout analysis now, thats what you pay your mentors for ;)
in summary, this film can get small children entertained, but on several aspects simply isnt up to standards.
cheers mates  and never stop learning, for the starts of your careers ya are doing a fine job
as a sidenote since this forum is actually about graphical art: that kind of music can be used on arcade games, but is absolutly not fitting any comedic scenario, i know music for comedy is hard to do, so it goes along well enough.

Indeed great job, I really like the sets and enviro's. The voice didn't match up a whole lot (as in what I thought the witch should sound like) but it was most defenately passable. :D
Awesomeness!

Hey Ales!
I think I already told you that some time ago, when the shortfilm was still in animation stage, without sound, nice renders etc. that it was my favorite AM shortfilm. What can I say now, with the sound and amazing rendering this shortfilm simply ROCKS DUDE! Fantastic work! Very funny, very well animated! Daphne is full of character and appeal, frogs are super awesome too!!! I like everything about this short. It has to be amazing feeling to see your hard work finally on the big screen, fully rendered etc. :). You deserve a huge beer buddy, and probably some more sleep :). Again, great and very inspiring work! Congrats!
Oh, and again, FROGS ARE SUPER AWESOME!

Thank you sooo much for all this extremely positive feedback. You have
no idea how much energy this gives me for the future. It's been crazy

starting to give up on me in the past 3 months. But it was worth it, every keyframe of it...

This is great work. I can really appreciate the ammount of work you have put in on it. I particularly liked the lighting and look of the film. I wondered if the stick was going to fall down too at the end but the frog gag was a good ending.
Animationwise I really liked the bit where she dances around with the broom at the beginning and the karate reaction to the brush landing on her head at the end.
Inspiring stuff.

Nice animated short, i really like the animation and overall design, makes me want to finish my own animated short film, as you obviously might have found out yourself it takes some serious time and effort to actually finish an animated short film, unfortunately i lack both time and money, i've still got hope though, ow yeah and a written script, wich always helps LOL, nice work man.

So wonderful, Ales. The frog killed me. Such a funny finishing touch. (Beautiful soundtrack too. The motor-scooter sound and the country music were perfect.) You should be so proud of yourself. I fully expect to see this in the SIGGRAPH theater.

Thank you for soooo many good vibes! This will keep me going for months! I really appreciate all the comments.
As far as preproduction material goes, I am afraid I'll have to dissapoint you, since there is really no fancy concept art that will make you go WOW! Just a few pencil sketches. I can look around and scan some final sketches that I used as a reference while modeling the characters&environment or show some images from the storyboard. But there was no time to do fancy color studies and gazillion witch and frog designs.

Heya,
Like I said nothing fancy, but here's some preproduction stuff I found.
This is the sketch I used as a reference when modeling Daphne. As you can see the final version turned quite different especially in terms of proportions. This is how like to work when modeling my own designs. I only use the reference in the early stages of modeling. At one point I drop the sketch and concentrate on what feels right while turning the model around, scaling different parts of the body up and down, pushing vertices around, etc...
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/alesmav/DaphneConcept.jpg
This are the two sketches I used as a reference for head modeling:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/alesmav/DaphneHeadConcept.jpg
The frog (much more similar to the final version )
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/alesmav/frogConcept.jpg
The only environment&color test in did in Photoshop (almost forgot about it - a bit too moody, isn't it :)
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/alesmav/swampEnvironmentConcept.jpg
...and a few situations that were not realized...
